PJ LIVE: ridiculously fast tempos?

Since reading this thread I have been listening to some of the 2010 bootlegs, and have to say, have been noticing the tempo thing more in certain cases, and finding it off putting sometimes. I just started on Newark 2010, and Of the Girl and Brain of J did give me this 'rushed' feeling that people are describing.

I think in 2010 they conciously tried to slow Even Flow down a bit.

I love how the songs sound when played quicker. For me there's nothing worse than seeing a live band that sounds the same as hearing them on an album.

To each their own, but I like music to be a bit aggressive at times.

For example I find Got Some to be quick on the album, but live it seems twice as fast. Some may fine it hard to adjust to, but I find it pretty cool.

I love the tempo of the live versions. I actually do listen more to live recordings than to the studio albums because of the tempo. Only in some really rare cases the songs are played too fast for me, then they sound as if they just rush through them ... Songs like In hiding, do the evolution or world wide suicide sound better when played in a faster tempo, that is my opinion (although I also love SVT...) Some songs are better with more tempo, others are not.

We all have different preferences and opinions, but can't we all agree that we wouldn't even be comparing live versions if they played it the same every time? They're musicians playing music, sometimes fast , sometimes slow, sometimes... realize I can only be as good as you let me.

I gave up on Even Flow long ago, it's always my pee break/bar run song now - you can guarantee it's going to be played at break-neck speed, and it goes on for like ten minutes.

Totally agree. Its not a rip on the band and i still love the shows, but i wish they would go back to the old tempo on a few numbers. Not for you is another example.

i agree, love how the songs change and we get to hear different versions that can completely transform the song
but
other things can make a song different, not just the pace
like how they did the alternate version of jeremy, i love it. they didn't make it faster, they made it slower but my point is that they can do other things to make a song more exciting to play live that doesn't involve speeding everything up

Have been listening to quite a few 2010 boots this weekend, and although there are certain songs where I have been put off by the tempo - the overall effect for me is incredibly alive and 'energising'. I agree - one thing I love about the band is that every era has a different feel, and no doubt things will change again.

Yeah, I wonder why they do that. Maybe to get through all the songs/fit one or two more in because they have a lot to get through and play more songs than most bands.

I agree with this thread and have been thinking this for years. Particularly every time the album version of Given to Fly comes on and I hear how great it can sound. Don't get me wrong, I still love it live but the album version is so much better. Same could be said for Go, Animal, Corduroy and of course Evenflow. There was a brief time where they played Given to Fly at a slow tempo live

Matt's drums sound so much better in that video then they do currently. They pop instead of bloop. Same can be said for Evenflow below in both tempo and Matt's drum sound

I agree with this. Anger and power are they key word. I listen to the Atlanta 94 boot and I hear an angry and loud and ferocious band. You don't hear that any more and I suspect it's because they aren't angry and ferocious anymore. They are on Julia Roberts soundtracks and on TV shows. Life is good for them. You aren't going to sound angry if you are happy in life. Plus....they have matured and gotten older. I'm just glad Ed stopped climbing shit.

OR....it's Matt Cameron. He is the only difference between genres. I do prefer Dave and Jack to Matt.

Given to Fly & Even Flow always get mentioned most in this debate, but the most ridiculous example I can think of is State of Love & Trust from Immagine In Cornice. Can't find a video of it now, but trust me. I think it's barely 3 minutes long

For what it's worth, I think 'Go' sounds incredible when sped up live. So amazingly tight and powerful. Given To Fly....not so much. That song is all about the slow build.
