    My understanding is that Black was about Ed's girlfriend in early high school. This is what I was told from someone who went to his high school in SD at the same time (and dissected his frog for him in Biology)!

    Wasn't there an article for years ago that said Ed was overly emotional in high school.

    His gf went away for a week or two so Eddie wore her scarf or something weird like that.

    You're right... i usually have a much more open interpretation but I think it's fair to say this one was written with one instance, lover, in mind.

    This is just based off of the evolution of the song.. the shit Eddie says right before he sings it.... the changes to the tags at the end (IE: We didn't belong together"... interviews about how he said it was so personal....

    but if some chick gave Eddie the cold shoulder in HS, she should sure as fuck be sorry now after finding out what a genius and an icon he is.

    Yes, it is about a girl...and possibly an abortion (written about by Ed in an article in 1993? in a magazine I can't remember)...check out 5horizons Articles link for that info...At any rate it is about some deeply profound loss in his life...and only recently he's dropped the "we belong together tag"...The depths of his despair in Black, only he knows...

    But also, this song can have very deep and profound meaning on a personal level for anyone who hears it.
