The whole thing is fucking incredible. Dr. John. Neil Young all stoned at the end.

Festival Express is another of my favorites. Not sure if it was mentioned.

    That I watched recently
Loud Quiet Loud a film about the Pixies - a documentary shot during there reunion tour.

Leonard Cohen Live in London - an amazing set of songs and amazing performance by a 75 year old Cohen. It's scary how good his voice still sounds.

7 Worlds Collide - Neil Finn and some really cool friends playing some really cool songs.

    My favourite documentaries:

Tom Petty - Runnin' Down A Dream
Bruce Springsteen - Wings for Wheels & The Making of Darkness...
Pearl Jam - Single Video Theory

Favourite concert footage (incuding unofficial releases):

Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000, Immagine In Cornice
R.E.M. - Road Movie, Perfect Square, Live at Austin City Limits
Bruce Springsteen - Live in New York City, Live in Barcelona, 'Breathless In Paris' 1985
    My Morning Jacket - Okonokos
    Queen - Live at Wembley

By the way, Springsteen's New York City and Barcelona DVDs are the closest thing to 100% pure definitionof 'joy' captured on film. I get goosebumps watching them every time and makes me jealous that i'm not in the E Street Band. Pearl Jam are my favourite band but I think Bruce is the most charismatic, most energetic performer ever.

  • I dont think that anyone has mentioned The Scorsese-directed, "Shine A Light" doc of the Rolling Stones. Real good with appearances from Jack White & Buddy Guy among others. Saw it in IMAX a couple years back.

    End of the century (Ramones)
Wow, I can't believe I forgot about this one. I wasn't a fan of the Ramones before since none of my friends really knew about them either. Incredible doc. on how they influenced so many bands but never hit commercial success. Watching Marky play drums in the Extras was surreal, he is so fast!

Metallica - Some Kind of Monster

First off, I can't believe Metallica allowed this film to be released because it documents the group almost breaking apart while the egos of Hetfield and Lars battle each other while Newstead runs for the hills and Kirk sits in the background like a little girl.

Even if you don't like their music, the drama is quite good.

The Who "The Kids are Alright" or "Amazing Journey"
These are both good, but Amazing Journey is more a documentary style history of the band and The Kids Are Alright covers from the earliest days till Keith Moon's death (not mentioned in the film but he died just before the film was released). Most people see TKAA first and it's so much fun that they expect Amazing Journey to be similar. They're both good in their way. Try to get the 3 disc version of Amazing Journey. The bonus disc is their show 1979 Chicago show. They were really on fire for that tour.

    Also recommended by The Who:
Live at Kilburn. Keith Moon's next to last live performance. The gig was being shot for The Kids Are Alright. It kind of falls apart but still has some great moments plus you get to see why fans know that if Pete's pissed off, he's going to put on a hell of a show. This dvd also has a great bonus disc of a show from December 1969. It's grainy (shot on 16mm) but it's contemporary with Live at Leeds. One of my faves.
    Maximum R&B Live
    Isle of Wight
Woodstock 40th anniversary edition. The bonus disc has an extra Who performance. (No, ya still don't get to see the famous Abbie Hoffman incident.) Also a nice performance by Johnny Winter on that bonus disc that really should have been in the movie.
Of the 2006-07 encore dvds, the best is probably Chicago, March 2007.
ANY bootlegs from the late 60s up through about 1976 are good. Houston 1975 is a popular one but there are many good ones out there.
