I don't have one of these and can't speak for it but I though someone who did not already have a player and didn't want to come out of pocket much may see this a a good deal.

Well, reasonable price being relative, I've had my Technics SL-1200 for about 15yrs...still sounds great...thing is a tank. Unfortunately, the prices on these have gone up almost 100% in the past few years (bought mine new for around 300, now they're in the 7-800+ range). If you can find a good used one, that would be the route I'd go. They are all over Craigslist at much cheaper prices, but I'd probably feel more comfortable getting a used one from a Music shop...Just my 2cents.

I was thinking about getting an audio technica pl120. Any thoughts on that one?

Decent Table...the Internal Pre-Amp is an interesting idea....Great Price!...Just make sure you get a nice Cartridge...these type of turntables (mine included) have heavier tonearms & can F-up a record pretty quick if you don't.

Technics 1200 MKII here. Prices will now be going up since Technics announced they are no longer making them after all these years.
You're right, these turntables were built to last and are some of the best you an buy as long as you have a decent stylus as well.

I'd recommend to anyone who wants a record player to actually use and enjoy: don't buy one of those USB ones or any other junk. Save up your money and look on ebay. You can find a very solidly made turntable in the $250-$400 range. Trust me it will be well worth it.
Also make sure you have a solid Receiver(amp) and quality speakers. There is zero sense in getting a nice table if the speakers hooked up to them sound like hollow soup cans. Don't waste your time and money then.
If you wait it out, save and get nice equipment, you will reap the rewards of beautiful sounds from the vinyl for years to come.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

I have a 1200 but it has been in the garage for about a decade. It used to be powered by my old receiver but i no longer have that. So to get it up and running I guess what i need is a "pre-amp" right? Buy one of those and hook speakers directly to the player and I would be all set correct?

Thanks for the reply. Any cartridge recommendations? I've never bought a table before, as my parents or roommates always had one

I've always used Shures...resonably priced...hold up well...been using the Shure M97xE for awhile now...but there are many others out there. Remember, don't skimp out on the stylus/cartridges..thats what actually touches your records.
The cartridge that comes with that turntable doesn't seem too bad.

The cartridge that comes with that turntable is pretty decent. If you're buying that one new I would keep it until need be.
    I'd recommend this cartridge. http://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Techn ... tegory=363
I had that one prior(my niece decided to slap the needle down on the platter and watch it spin round and round). This needle is great and is moderately priced in comparison to some of the other needles out there. Sounds very good.

I have one as well, and yes it's built like a tank and I doubt it will ever break down, but I'm really disappointed on the tracking with it at end of platter. I've had protractors out, I've got it professionally set up, but it still performs badly at the end of the platter.
