one my other favorite seattle bands, 70 proof has, on average, four guitar players, a b-3 player, two drummers, a bass player and paul passerelli as the singer and even though the stage gets crowded you can't beat the sound!

Can anyone else name any other bands with 3 guitarists?
Ed is just sometimes a guitar player... In my opinion him playing guitar (mostly power chords I believe) make the song feel bigger in the live setting.
edit: and not that I like them at all but I think slipknot has like a shit load of guitar players... amirite?
No different than the Rolling Stones. They have two full time guitarists and a third guitarist on about 2/3rds of their songs when played live (Sometimes it is Mick Jagger, and sometimes it is Blondie Chaplin).
There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.
it allows them to add more depth to their songs. take note when eddie has his electric most of the time stone has an acoustic. ie it allows eddie to play rhythm, stone to play acoustic to give it a diff edge (eg betterman in my tree etc list goes on) and mike can play leads. when they have all 3 electrics they emphasize power and loudness eg RVM.

plus i like watching him play, he's enthusiasitc about playing guitar...probably because his hero is a guitar legend (legend because of the way he plays/writes more than his skill.....but i digress). he enjoys it and he riffs out hard...its fun.....sometimes.
