pearl jam for beginners

i just started seeing a girl who is unfamiliar with pj's body of work...so i'm making her a mix cd of tracks that will get her into the band more. i'm trying to keep it upbeat (no betterman). any suggestions?

State of love and trust, blood, lukin and once for sure. Maybe immortality, beautiful song. I wouldn't put any covers on it.

yeah no covers if she's just starting to listen to them
a mix of all of their albums is what i would go for, choose your favourite from each album or some of the songs that you like the most, it'll make the mix more meaningful to both of you :)
go for a range of different tempos, themes, styles etc. to show the variety of pj - probably make her more curious to want to hear more

    just my two cents :)

I dunno but Ledbetter absolutely blew me away when I 1st heard it. Mike's guitaring hooked me for sure & yeah I would have to say to include Better Man.

  • I was introduced to Pearl Jam in a similar fashion, and it was Last Kiss of all things that got me hooked.

I would definitely add Better Man and even Nothingman because the sounds are great and they are just good songs to listen to that most people (I think) would enjoy. I would also add Elderly Woman.

Additionally, I would say to put in quite a bit of Ten, Dissident, Rearviewmirror, Given to Fly, In My Tree, even Unthought Known or Amongst the Waves.

You know, the "safer" ones. Also depends on what she likes to listen to, obviously.

Good luck, and what a nice thing to do.
    Well, fuckers, he still stands.

jump right in with Blood, Leash, and Lukin... if she doesn't flinch, you've got yourself a keeper...
37 PJ Shows, 3 EV Shows, 1134 Total Songs, 24 Different Openers, 9 Different Closers, 252 Unique Songs (never enough)
  • also mix in a Creed and a Nickelback song and if she identifies those as the worst songs she has ever heard - you may have a keeper.

haha this is funny! i did the same thing for my boyfriend. hes an 80s freak-blah. so i figured as long as he can dig pj, there is a chance. thankfully it went well.

try out some unreleased stuff too...Wash and Fatal are some of my favorites. Theyre slower so they may be good compliments to the upbeat, high energy stuff. I wiuld also hook her up with some live songs...PJ live is too good to be true. Have fun!

    Man Of The Hour
    Just Breathe
    Low Light
    Drifting
    Thumbing My Way
    Porch
    Small Town
    Fatal
    LBC
    Footsteps

That's actually not a bad idea. A long way away from where they are now of course but still maybe another way of starting her off.
