Let's talk PJ improv in general

1. 2003 is the year of the improv, right? (I’m too lazy to check all the years, but so far the boots containing these that I’m coming across are all from 2003. Maybe one from 2005.) So are there other years?

2. When you listen to these improvs..do they strike as unplanned? Not really talking about lyrics, but more like when they come up in the setlist. Once they get going they seem loose of course. But when they start seems like it could have been slightly planned. Perhaps someone with handwritten setlists could confirm/deny this? What do you think?

3. What are the absolute best improvs? I like the Montreal 2003 one (so far).

    I'd say they're almost definitely pieces of tunage that haven't found a home that the fella's have kicked around a time or 2 in soundchecks or whatever.

    Quite a few of them in 03 were about voting...SUV song or somethin like that, it was called.

    Seems like there's quite a few on 2000 and 2003 bootlegs.

    My favorite is "Going Home" from Salzburg Austria in 2000.

    Check out the improv before "habit" from the famous Mansfield 9/16/98 show ( there is a really good ALD source out there)
    This improv is hauntingly good and considered by many traders to be one of the best!

    I don't own an extensive collection of bootlegs... or any bootlegs at all for that matter (not entirely true - I think I own five)... are there any PJ improvs that turned up as songs on later albums?
    And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

    This one is a lovely moment indeed. Also the one before Habit in Berlin which has a loose resemblance to the Smashing Pumpkins or even Nirvana with warbly Nick Cave style vocals. Something about "free at last." Also the one before Immortality in Nagoya 2003 is pretty sensational for an improv so I reckon the tunes had a quick beginning to life somewhere at a soundcheck or even in studio. The lyrics to most seem to just happen as I'm sure does some of the music. RVM has had so many of them!!
    Like a book among the many on a shelf...

    Back of my Mind from Boston 2 2000 and On the Moon from Nurnberg 2000 are my faves.

    I don't know if anyone has noticed but musicwise that improv is exactly the same as the one from Berlin 2000 and Montreal 2000.

    Does anyone have any info on this ? Unreleased song maybe ?

    i thought there was a new song from portland 00. a couple of cool improvs are house of blues in 03 and state college had two i believe also in 03.

    I dig the Improv from Perth 2003. It has a sort of haunting yet elegant feel.
