Noam Pickilney is one of the best living banjo players!
I'm a fan of Nickel Creek (Sean and Sara Watkins, Chris Thile). I catch the Watkins Family at Largo in L.A. alll the time. The Watkins Family is hosting a Christmas show on the 21st. I've seen them play with Jackson Browne, Fiona Apple, semi-regular Benmont Tench, Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings, John-Paul Jones and Greg Leise.
The Punch Brothers have also made appearances. I've seen Chris play along side Bela Fleck.
I saw Noam and Critter play with Ed Helms (yup... Andy Bernard from 'The Office').
If you get a chance, catch the Steep Canyon Rangers who sometimes appear with Steve Martin.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Their "before the frost...until the freeze" album is one of my favorite and it is very old timey. They recorded it live for very few fans in levon helm's barn recording studio. Two thumbs up for this album~JzP0

For some great old time vinyl ...http://www.folkways.si.edu/searchresults.aspx?set=1&sPhrase=LP&sType=format
I got the Dock Doggs, a Lucinda Williams, Elizabeth Cotten, and Roscoe Holcomb. I would suggest any of them. It's great company as well.~JzP0 -

Good lord. Those shorts on Bob. I know Jerry got a lot of crap for the black t-shirts over the years, but thank goodness he didn't follow Bob's lead on this one."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Good lord, Bob always wore short shorts--Daisy Dukes, etc, didn't he?
But did you hear how this song sails? Jerry's solo at around 3:59 is
:crazy: :wtf: would describe it best.

Yeah, the flashdance shirt was a nice change from the Polos that Bob favored for a while too.
This version does cook, the little solos at 2:30ish and the ones that you mention are great, Crazy Fingers indeed. And Brent's piano fills were always soooo right on. The whole bluegrass concept of everyone playing a lead, or at least not trapped in a traditional structure, really is at the core of what Jerry/Dead did all along."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I've always wanted to hear/see pj do a round of solos. Lots of bands do it for one song (...RVM?) or at the end of a show.~JzP0

Yeah, I'd love to see them break out a bit in this respect too. I've been going back and listening to a lot of Dead recently, and while it isn't as apparent as how Dylan rearranges his songs, they kept things pretty fresh over the years by tweaking things instrumentally, in builds and segues."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
