Now, I may be the slowest Pearl Jam fan in history and Im sure theres a big chance this has been previously discussed at length, so dont be giving me any of you s%$t!!!!.....

....but I was sitting looking through all the PJ album covers, just trying to think of where they were at when they got the ideas....Now, I had a look at Riot Act and suddenly thought, I wonder was this album title a play on the patRIOT ACT??....theres obviously some political overtones in the songs so I guess the answer to my question is yes?!! DO you concur??

So while, we're at it....what are we making of the inlay of 'avocado'?....as in the 3 photos of the avocado....??

Dont know why its taken me so long to think of these things....but there ya go!!

Let the onslaught begin....

It's okay, I give noone s@*t on this site :D . I found this about the avocado cover, don't know if it's true coz I found it on Wikipedia but you might find it interesting:

The album's cover art, photographed by Brad Klausen, depicts an avocado cut in half with the seed still in place. McCready said, "That symbolizes just kind of...Ed's at the end of the process and said, for all I care right now, we've done such a good job on this record, and we're kind of tired from it. Let's throw an avocado on the cover. I think that's what happened, and our art director goes, hey, that's not a bad idea. I think we were watching the Super Bowl, and we had some guacamole or something."[38] Because the album is self-titled, many fans refer to it as "Avocado" or "The Avocado Album."[39] The inside cover depicts this same seed by itself. The back cover features the same avocado, without the seed. The cover was named in Pitchfork Media's top 25 worst album covers of 2006.[40] Fernando Apodaca handled the liner notes art as well as the music video for "Life Wasted", which emulates the liner notes art from the album.[41] The vinyl pressing of the album is a limited and one pressing issue, just like fellow No Code and Binaural albums.

On the choice of a self-titled album, Vedder explained, "In the end, we thought there was enough there with the title of the songs, so to put another title on the album would have seemed pretentious. So, really, it's actually Nothing by Pearl Jam."[42] During the making of the album Vedder considered the title Superun-owned, a play on Soundgarden's 1994 album, Superunknown. He explained, "We're un-owned. We want to remain un-owned."[3]

Those who pre-ordered the album through Pearl Jam's official website received a version of the album with different CD art and packaging than the retail version. Instead of the retail digipack packaging, this fan club pre-order version resembles a book and has the liner notes bound inside it. In addition, a live CD of the band's show on December 31, 1992 at The Academy Theater in New York City was also included with the pre-order

That is a very interesting observation. It hadn't occurred to me either. :)

A quick search of the term "patriot act" on google trends shows a high presence in the years just post Riot Act's release. Too bad it doesn't cover the years leading up to it.

I thought Ed came up with that name for the album during an interview where he was talking about the patriot act, no?

I believe the patriot act was being discussed in the media before Riot Acts name was decided. I thought that's how Ed got the name, at least I assumed that at the time.

Once again, not the most reliable of resources but I found this about the Riot Act cover:

The album's cover art, photographed by Ament, features two skeletons wearing crowns, suggesting the possibility that the two represent a king and a queen. The forged metal figurines were created by blacksmith Kenny Gilliam.[35] According to Ament, the band had trouble coming up with a name for the album.[36] After the artwork had been finalized and the tracks were sequenced, the band spent weeks trying to come up with a title. Vedder suggested Riot Act, and the band members went with it as they were tired with trying to come up with a title.[36] McCready stated that the title has no real significance. He said, "I guess we were trying to come up with a title that reflected some of the music on the record, which we thought was urgent-sounding and kind of loud...It just seemed to fit."[9] Ament implied that the title has to do with "getting your act together."[37] The term "riot act" dates back to the Riot Act of 1714 which was introduced by the Parliament of Great Britain giving permission to local authorities to declare any group of more than twelve people to be unlawfully assembled :)

I have personally talke to Ed and asked him this question...

His answer was along the lines of:

'An Avocado was the picture on the cover because we[the band] had been thinking about what the cover art should be. Months had gone by and all of our ideas had been shot down. We didn't really know what message we wanted to portray. So I[Ed] came up with the cover art. I[Ed] painted the blue background, cut the avocado, and stuck it up on little toothpicks to make it look like it's floating. I took the picture and sent it to the rest of the band. They{the rest of PJ] asked what the meaning was, and I[Ed] replied that there is absolutely no meaning. Just completely random with no themes or underlaying idea or thoughts. They[the rest of PJ] loved it and so thats why there is an avocado on the cover.'

    Paraphrased of course..

  • "a vigorous reprimand" I would definately say that this album (Riot Act) fits that definition. Especially Bu$hleaguer.

Ha! I had the same thought about the Patriot Act a few years ago:
