I've been really digging them as of late especially and was curious to what everyone else would rate as some of their favorite Wilco songs (maybe 5) and also favorite album. They are just so diverse and I would bet there is a good variety of answers for this thread. Here mine in no order:

1. Heavy Metal Drummer
2. Misunderstood
3. Via Chicago
4. Kingpin
5. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

Album: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

  • Great question!

I'm going with Sky Blue Sky for my album, and my 5 favorite jams are:

    1. Impossible Germany
    2. Jesus Etc.
    3. Everlasting Everything
    4. Spiders (Kidsmoke)
    5. You and I

I also want to say that Wilco (The Album) kicks major league ass. I didn't like it initially, but now I can't get enough.
"FF, I've heard the droning about the Sawx being the baby dolls. Yeah, I get it, you guys invented baseball and suffered forever. I get it." -JearlPam0925

Nels Cline's solo on "Impossible Germany" is one of my favorite rock guitar solos. Ever.

As for albums, agreed that "Sky Blue Sky" & "Wilco (the album)" are awesome, but do get "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". BrilliantBrilliantBrilliant album.

Wilco has so many great songs. It's hard to choose.

I will say that Yankee Hotel foxtrot and summer teeth are the two fave albums of theirs; you really can't go wrong with any wilco album though.

Dude, AM's an underrated record. I actually think that alot of the songs on that album stand with their very best work.

California Stars was from the Mermaid Avenue album. All of the songs were written by Woody Guthrie, but I think Wilco was the first band to actually record it. Maybe others have played it since. There's also some beautiful songs by Natalie Merchant on these albums that we play for our little ones. (There's a Part I and II). Also Billy Bragg sings on many of the songs.

As far as my favorite Wilco songs, that is so hard for me. I was thinking about this the other day and was stumped. I kept re-doing my list. But I'll list five of my very favorites.

Mermaid Avenue was a collective project between Billy Bragg & Wilco and they took lyrics (poetry) that Guthrie never completed music to. Billy Bragg and Wilco then wrote original music to go with the words. I believe part of the lore with Guthrie's lyrics was that Bob Dylan was once asked to or wanted to write music for them, but was unable for one reason or another.

    Task at hand...

Being There is easily (well sometimes Summerteeth) my favorite Wilco.

Songs - Why would you wanna live, Sunken Treasure, How to Fight Loneliness, She's a Jar, I'm Trying to Break Your Heart

Needless to say I haven't been too pumped by their last couple releases. Though I do really like to see the current lineup live, the studio has not been kind to them.

Wilco(The Album) is the only one that I really dig, but Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is growing on me. I've listened to quite a bit, but nothin's grabbed me. Just stickin YHF in the car cd player, it's already grown on me after a few times through.

1)pieholden suite 2)hummingbird 3)misunderstood 4)passenger side 5)hate it here. summerteeth is usually my favorite but sometimes i convince myself its being there. i don't count live albums, or kicking television would win in a landslide, that's the one i go back to most often.

  • Was curious if there are any Wilco b-sides? Are they worth checking out?
  • jesus, this thread is 2 pages long and only one mention of At least thats what you said? That guitar solo is life affirming. And what about Solitaire? the guitar riff is gorgeous? How about Sunken Treasure, and its breakdown about how music is the reason Jeff Tweady exists? Mirrors my own view of music to the t.
