Hey :)
I'm sorry if there has been another topic that already has this, I've searched the porch for what I'm looking for but i can't find it, so I was wondering if you could help.
I'm a completely newbie to PJ Bootlegs. When I first started listening to PJ, I just listened to the studio albums. I knew about the live albums and bootlegs, but I didn't really bother with them. I wasn't aware of the awesomeness of PJ Live...blah blah blah, basically, to cut a long story short, I love the bootlegs :D I can't get enough of the Live shows.
BUT. my iPod space/computer space/freetime/laziness means that I don't want ALL the bootlegs that exist in the world. I just want a selection. A really good selection that is. :) I know there are some amazing essential shows for any PJ bootleg fan and I really want to have/know which ones.
I'm thinking up to 10 shows for each year, if it's possible.
If you guys could recommend a few of the MUST HAVE shows from each year that would be great :)
As well as having the essential shows, having a handpicked selection (chosen by fellow fans) is my goal. I love rare songs, covers etc.
Any shows that YOU personally love and think that are essential to a collection, just post them.
Amazing setlists/Unique versions of songs/great energy
I hope it isnt too much to ask, a couple of shows would do. like ...
1992- rotterdam, den haag, unplugged
1994- atlanta, boston
1998-msg
etc.etc.
i know some of you are experts at this so I'll leave you guys to it :)
pearljambootlegs.org is the only website i've used so far.
also i prefer mp3 because I don't know how to convert FLAC to mp3, incase that affects anything
I know that later shows/years where pj has released official bootlegs will have to be bought, so I'm saving for those ones too :)

Thanks so much
ps: again, im sorry if there is already another topic about this,
pps: I'm sorry that it's such a long post as well, I'm a rambler :)

You can get a good start right here in the "GOODS" section!!!
I would start with 2 GREAT BARGAINS...
The Gorge & Philadelphia Box Sets!!!
For $35.00 you get 3 AMAZING shows at The Gorge.
and the PHILLY BOX SET is the historic last 4 shows at the Spectrum.
It's a GOOD DEAL, considering you get 4 show for only $60.00.
If you order before midnight tonight, you'll also get 20% off if you use the spectrum coupon!!
    Enjoy :ugeek:

I heard 11/3/96 Berlin on Sirus PJ radio a few weeks ago and have been meaning to look for the download it and it sounded like sound board quality which appears to be a good thing for pre 2000 shows, but I am a nivice with the bootlegs. Though Sirius PJ radio helps alot.

  • The Gorge box was the thing that really got me into PJ boots and just recently i've discovered 2 great shows, Santa Barbara and Pistoia both from 2006. The latter one is also heavily featured in Immagine In Cornice.

Another good source for downloads is the Present Tense site, lots of great stuff there and there are FLACs and MP3s of most shows.

Also got to recommend all of the Bridge School recordings.

anyone know how to convert flac to mp3? i hear that its better quality than mp3, but i don't know what to do with it once I have flac files on my computer
    thanks again

You can't convert FLACs directly to MP3 as FLACs are compressed WAVE files. You need to download some software to decompress them:

    http://flac.sourceforge.net/

This programme will convert FLAC to WAVE.

You'd be far better off downloading MP3 versions and not bothering with FLACs, there are lots of sources even here on the Porch for MP3s. Try this thread:

    http://forums.pearljam.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=135585

Gremmie.net, The Present Tense, We Got Shit and Spreading The Jam are all good sources of MP3 boots.

If you really want to convert the FLACs then you'd need additional software or alternatively burn the decompressed WAVE files to CD-R and then extract them from the resulting discs as MP3s using Windows Media Player.

I tend to focus more on the official boots since 2000, so I'm afraid I can not recommend many shows before that. I do know that Atlanta 1994, Soldiers Field 1995, Randalls Island 1996 are classics by all means. I judge these bootlegs on first and foremost if the band was somewhat tight. If its is a great setlist and they are overly sloppy, I don't feel it is a great show. High energy is also important.

2000 Great tour, very underrated. Many great shows that are musically tight and great setlists.
    Cardiff Wales
    Columbus
Detroit My personal favorite from 2000, opening with Go and the rest of the set kills
    Katowice 6-16-00
    Milan
    Pittsburgh
    Praha
    San Francisco
    St. Louis

2003 Not as great as some say. I feel the energy is high for these shows, but most are somewhat sloppy.
    Buffalo
    Champaign
    Lexington
New York 7-9-2003 Much better than the previous night that's on the 2003 DVD
St Louis Best show from 2003. Opening with Present Tense and several other rarities.

2005 Has the best set lists in my opinion.
    Hamilton
    London
    Mexico City
    St Johns both nights
    Philadelphia
    Rio
Thunderbay a controversial choice, but there's something about the energy at this show.

2006 almost always tight performances, setlists vary from average to great. My second favorite tour.
    Adelaide 11-21-2006
Bern One of my favorite setlists the band has performed. If you only get one from 2006 I recommend this 100%
    Camden 5-28-2006
    Detroit
    Dublin
    Honolulu
Las Vegas Another controversial choice because Ed was sick, but the show is very fun and not as sloppy as some might say here.
Marseille is a little sloppy on Eds part, but the setlist is killer
    Melbourne 11-13-2006
    Milan
    Newcastle
    San Diego
    Santa Barbabra
    Gorge both nights
Torino where they play Avocado in its entirety and flawlessly
Vitoria is a close 2nd for me in 2006. The best version of Go Ive heard. Ed was on fire that night.
    Zagreb

2008 short tour with good setlists, Eds voice was a little rough.
Bonnaroo I was here and only recommend it if you like the setlist tremendously. It is a great show, but somewhat overrated. Performance is quite shaky, not really sloppy. The energy is incredible though.
    Columbia
    Hartford
    VA Beach very underrated show
West Palm Beach I may get flack for this one, but there's something about it. Not the tightest of all shows, but I really dig the setlist and Ed appeared to be in a great mood. One of the most unappreciated shows in recent memory. Great way to kick off the 08 tour.

2009 I feel the this tour was a bit overrated, even if Backspacer is my favorite PJ album. Eds voice was stretched thin it seems. Still some solid shows. I can only recommend a few because I have not heard as many as the previous tours.
All the Philly shows are a safe bet
    Salt Lake City
    Portland
    Melbourne

2010 Has become my personal favorite tour so far. Eds voice is the best its been in 10 years, setlists are cool, solid performances all around, and the band has great energy. Id actually recommend finding the setlists you like and just go from there because from all Ive heard the band was quite consistent performance wise.

Bristow is by far the most unappreciated of the tour. I admit that i was there , but I was at Bonnaroo as well and don't recommended it that highly. This show I will. The band was full of spunk, extremely tight with only about 2 mess ups, and the setlist was far better than what it was given credit. I prefer this show over the other (Bonnaroo) Ive been to.
    Cleveland
    Boston
    Newark

More to come with the 2010 tour because Ive not heard as many as I have hoped for. Money is tight.
