So i know what many people here are going to say but this is an important step that causes great hope for many HIV activists out there.

And a surprise from this pope...no?
Didn't read that article, so don't know if it's in there, but I thought it strange that the Vatican was prepared a while ago for a statement like this and it got stopped. If the Vatican is ready to do it, who in the Catholic church can stop it? Seems strange.hippiemom = goodness0 -
what i find strange is that using condoms to prevent disease and the spread of aids, particularly with male prostitutes is ok, yet using them as a contraceptive is still wrong.
does anyone else see a contradiction here?
i mean if it is ok for one small segment of the population of men to use them, why is it not acceptable for ALL men to use them?"You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Of course it is a contradiction, they are simply trying to use words to let them off the hook for their stupid view of condoms. And I say, fine, if that's what it takes, go ahead and start there.hippiemom = goodness0 -

According to the Pope here, it is acceptable for all men to use them for purposes of not spreading disease. It doesn't just say married men, and it does include male prostitutes-- so my reading of that is all men for this specific reason. After all, how does one know for sure whoever he sleeps with doesn't have HIV / AIDS? Will this in turn stop also have contraceptive application as well? Of course, but you're not going to see them openly endorse this stance even if it seems practical.
Either way, this is progress in baby steps for the Catholic Church. Some Catholics will be pissed off at this move, some will just about call it gospel, and most really just won't give a fuck

I read about this the other day.
The first thing I thought was, of course, FINALLY.
The second thing I said was, now that the POPE thinks its okay... we can start trying to curb a disease that is wasting away an entire continent... now the sheep can blindly follow.live pearl jam is best pearl jam0 -

I don't give the Catholic Church or the Pope all that much credit with regards to how closely their parishoners follow their doctrine. Every week is pretty much civil disobedience in church with regards to receiving the Host. 75% of the people choose to receive it, and it's highly unlikely that even 10% of them are in what hardcore Catholics consider is "a state of grace." This, by their teachings is worse than a mortal sin.
I wouldn't go expecting an influx of donations for condoms to Africa as a result of the Pope changing his mind on this.0
