so trying to keep plastic trash and waste out of the ocean is elitist???yahamita wrote:
when did conservation and trying to conserve a natural habitat and environment become the priorities of an elitist? it is common sense to me....Post edited by gimmesometruth27 on"You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

It's elitist to the same segment of the population that thinks an invisible man making the entire galaxy out of nothing at all, and having a son who can walk on water, makes perfect sense, yet organisms changing from one form to another over the course of millions of years is the stuff of fairy tales. Some people lean too far to the right for their own good lolAnd I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.0 -

Yeah, I don't see how this is elitist either. Rather, it's innovative in helping companies do the right thing.0

It isn't the environmentalism that makes him an "elitist." It's that he's a Rothschild. I don't know very much about David here in particular, but it's a safe bet that if he is an heir to the banking elite of the same name, that some portion of every dollar you earn ends up in this guy's pocket.
Now, if you take it to the uber conspiracy theorist level-- the guy wants a clean planet so him and all of his buddies can enjoy it when 80% of us have been eugenicized (is that a word?)

After watching the video here, this is something that I personally am VERY MUCH about. Companies being motivated to do the right thing and deliver a better and cleaner product because the people demand such a thing in the marketplace.
Cost is always important to people, but I think the key to getting America's economy back in order is in making stuff again-- QUALITY STUFF. It used to be our thing, and it should be again. The option should be there to buy a cheaper, lesser product made overseas, and I have no problems with free trade. If people want quality, there is one place that they should look for it. Here. Pay a little more for something that works better and lasts longer. Or buy a 6-pack of crap from China through Wall*Mart and throw them out as they fall apart

i wonder who's job it is to come up with the latest term to ostracize people? ... elitist! ... yeah, let's start calling people elitists and get everyone riled up ...
at the end of the day ... it will be up to people and businesses to save the environment ... the gov't can not do anything as it has long been to dysfunctional to accomplish anything except start wars ...0 -

I hear ya about these terms that get thrown around-- the word "racist" is one that has been completely over blown, "anti-semetic" is another, and the list goes on and on. Of course there are real racists, and anti-semites, etc..., and those terms should be reserved for those people who have truly earned those titles. Jon Stewart did a great job of explaining this at his Rally to Restore Sanity.
However, I do feel that elitism really is at the heart of the many of the problems society faces. There really are people out there with an incredible concentration of wealth and power that really feel that they do know what is best for everyone else, and force it on everyone through government and big business. Elitism has made America the world's police, and elitism has given birth to banks running and centrally planning the economy-- an impossible feat.0 -

i don't disagree the influence of "elitists" but similar to your point on "racists" ... people relate to the term without really knowing what it means ... they toss it around without actually understanding why it is a bad thing ...0 -

Cajun, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one.
I don't, however, believe Stone is doing anything "elitist" or pretentious at all. I'm all for conservation, so long as it's responsible at the same time. Corporate accountability makes sense.Bristow, VA (5/13/10)0 -

Elitism is the belief or attitude that some individuals, who supposedly form an elite — a select group of people with intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes — are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight or those who view their own views as so; whose views and/or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom render them especially fit to govern.[1] Alternatively, the term elitism may be used to describe a situation in which power is concentrated in the hands of a limited number of people. Those opposed to elitism are considered supporters of anti-elitism, populism or the political theory of pluralism. Elite theory is the sociological or political science analysis of elite influence in society - elite theorists regard pluralism as a utopian ideal.Jeanwah wrote:Yeah, I don't see how this is elitist either. Elitism may also refer to situations in which an individual assumes special privileges and responsibilities in the hope that this arrangement will benefit humanity or themselves. At times, elitism is closely related to social class and what sociologists call social stratification. Members of the upper classes are sometimes known as the social elite. The term elitism is also sometimes used to denote situations in which a group of people claiming to possess high abilities or simply an in-group or cadre grant themselves extra privileges at the expense of others. This form of elitism may be described as discrimination.I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me...GUARANTEED!

Thanks for the explanation... I know what an elitist is, I did not know who David de Rothschild is, outside of the environmental field.
Either way, I'd like to believe that what Stone is doing is coming from what he's passionate about: the earth. Not because of who he gets to rub elbows with.0 -
isnt it the other way around, this yahoo got to rub elbows with Stone, the Thread should more appropriately say "Elitist (even though I dont think he is an elitist by definition) rubs elbows with Stone......and gets some chicks too"......or something like that>>>>

I'd be okay with Stone working with Usama bin Laden... if Usama Bin Laden could convince corporations to quit polluting our oceans.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
