Thanks for the letter! I will read it to her. She will stare at me unblinkingly, and say, "Dream on, 4x20."

    *sigh*

I am doing the Secret Santa and have been amassing an interesting assortment of items to include. I wasn't planning on the holiday card exchange, I haven't checked into the details of that.

    Are you doing it?

Always, and always of the three dogs. The much-put-upon three dogs.

Are you and the Mrs. in the photo, or is it kids only? (And this year puppies.)

Are you in the picture or just the pups?

It's always been just the pups, but this year we have a good one of the Mr. and myself, with all three dogs, sitting on the bow of the boat. We actually both have our eyes open, and nobody is grimacing or looking away. Well, except I have the puppy in a bit of a headlock...

How many cards do you mail?

    Somewhere between zero and none.

We would need a parnoramic camera to get all our kids in one shot anyway...

    You?

I usually don't send out any, but since I can't afford the Secret Santa, I signed up for the Holiday Cards...so I will be sending out 6 cards...(thanks BD...now I don't have to send you one! )

And I make the cards using my artistic abilities....

Do any family members send you a 'yearly letter'?

 Oh God yes. Painful. They're all so cheery and swell. All the kids are beautiful, all the parents are nurturing. Gimmeafuckinbreak.

(Am I getting cranky in my dotage?!?)

Ever want to send one for real, and write, "Susie continues to struggle with addiction but was only taken into protective custody once this year, Roger has been siphoning money from his accounts at work and so far has successfully eluded detection, and Karen is becoming increasingly demented."

Nope... and we don't do the family picture holiday card thing over here really either ... just send shop bought x-mas cards.

EDIT: unlost ... we don't send them so don't need to do that ;)

What do single people do over there for holiday cards with no family to assemble?

We both grew up in the town we live in now, and our families are there. But since Mr. Unlost's dad is increasingly confused, we really keep it low-key to avoid flustering him. Sometimes we just do brunch instead of a formal dinner. We haven't really figured it out yet for this year. His brother hosts a really nice dinner on Christmas Eve, and he always invites some people who have no place to go. (His brother and sister-in-law are angels like that, they seem to find these lost souls and get involved with making sure they're okay.)

Re. the tree, Mr. Unlost strongly prefers a real one. I sometimes would rather a fake one, but the real one makes him happy. We usually put it up a couple of weeks before. And we put a gate around it to keep the unlost dogs away.

One year I kept finding broken ornaments on the couch. Then I happend to peek around the kitchen doorway, and saw Sweet Pea jump up on the couch, lean wayyyy over, and carefully sniff several ornaments on the adjacent tree. She clearly was considering them all, then oh so gently took one in her teeth and eased it off the branch. She settled down, preparing to enjoy a nice chew, when I said, "Hey!" and she almost jumped out of her tricolored skin. Subsequently we relocated the tree to the foyer and now we put a gate around it.

Have you ever had a Christmas tree (or menorah, as applicable) related disaster?
