I think these are the best sounding shows from 1993, there are a few audience shows that sound pretty good, but I think this is it . . .

Rotterdam 7/16/93 (FM mixed w/ other souces for a complete show) Edit: actually this might be the audience link, damn, sorry, there is an FM broadcast (partial) of this show out there, I have it, just listened to it and its not the same as this source . . .

As for 1994 shows, well as everyone knows, nothing can beat Atlanta's sound quality, here are two more good quality performances. . .

    Hey NorthShoreBlues,

Thanks for all of your help. MTV, Bridge School, and SNL I will definitely consider. I love "Animal" from MTV and SNL was great too. I wasn't too impressed with the sound quality of Gilimi 8/14/93 (I listened to some of this last night after you suggested it) and I have the '93 Indio show, but I am not keen on the sound quality of that one either. I still need to check out Rotterdam 7/16/93 and see what cuts are from the FM broadcast (Thanks for the link). Las Vegas, Atlanta, and St. Pete are definitely on board.

Thanks for your suggestions and if you can think of anymore please let me know.

Ok, I don't want to let anybody down, but the best way to do this is the lazy way. This gives us the best sound quality. Last night I took all of the best quality versions of live "Vs." tracks and listened to them (about 2 1/2 hours worth), and I came to the definite conclusion that you can't beat Atlanta! So..... With a lot of editing, I believe that the following track list (See Below) is the best sounding version we will get. I think that if time permits, I can do all the editing today and have this thing ready to download tomorrow. Let me know what you think.

Go for it Cam4President. Sounds a good idea to start with at least. Can we have a 'version 1', and then comment on any particular songs which stand out as maybe needing improvement? I can have more of a listen to some of the other versions as well - I thought that the St Pete's 'performances' were really good for instance- was it the sound quality issue which meant you rejected those versions? The only concern I have about just re-ordering Atlanta is that with the familiarity of the show we may just 'hear' it as a mixed up Atlanta, rather than a live Vs

We can definitely start off with a version 1. I want people to download it, give it a listen, and then suggest improvements, plus with this one I figure that we will have a regular version consisting of the album tracks and a version with bonus tracks such as covers.

As for St. Pete, I love that show and it has some killer performances, but if you listen to it right next to Atlanta, then St. Pete's audio just doesn't match up quality wise. It's a big difference in sound.

I understand the concern that people may have with a "mixed up" Atlanta disc. I believe that when it is put together and edited, it won't sound like that. The cool thing is that if it does end up sounding like a Atlanta mix up, then we can replace some of those ATL songs with Vegas or another town.

This has been fun so far listening to Vs. era live material. I already have edited three songs including the end of "Daughter" which has the dedication before "Go".

EDIT: Three bonus tracks that have to be on the final version are "Angel" from '92 Bridge, "Rockin' in the Free World" from MTV, and Sonic Reducer from ???

Sounds like we're on track again! Thanks for doing this.

How about this for an idea, which you can reject if it will be a headache and you don't have the time:

we widen the show selection to ALL soundboard shows up to the start of the 2000 tour. This looks like one of your specialist areas, from your blog- and the original idea for the vs only shows was to limit our choices to something manageable, at which we have proved
    A bit too successful!

What do you think? Say no if a headache, but yes if you think it would be rewarding

I would have to say yes and no to your idea. I think we could either do this in conjunction with what we are doing (ex. Disc 1 93/94 Vs. and Disc 2 2000 Vs.) or we could do this as another project. I personally like your first idea of taking only tracks from Vs. era concerts the best. The reason being is that the Vs. album was a youthful, straight-forward, loud, balls to the wall album which in my opinion is best captured during their earlier years when they were younger. Although they are a better band today, I think that these songs sound best when they were unpolished. Besides, say what you will about Dave A., but I think that he best suits this era. I believe that Matt is a better drummer, but Dave A. fits this sound better.

I definitely would say no to replacing idea 1 with taking songs from 2000 SB boots, because I am almost finished with Version 1 (our "Rough Draft") and it will be ready for the public to download and make their suggestions for improvement, tomorrow around 9:00am EST (2:00pm UK time) :D

I like you Cameron4President - you talk a lot of sense!! I'm really looking forward to hearing version 1, and seeing how it works out. It will be interesting looking at some bonus tracks from that tour to complete the disc I think. Maybe we can come up with something a bit creative... Would you agree we want to keep them under 80 minutes? (Single CD length)

Can't wait to hear V1 - don't sweat too much on the times though!!

edit: just re-read your earlier post and I think it answers some of my questions about the discs - you're suggesting a straight disc one with just vs, and a second 'bonus disc' - is that right? Sorry to be dumb. Anyway, you're the one putting all the work in - am just pleased to be able to contribute, hear some fresh music, and revisit the Pearl Jam - so thanks a lot for doing this for us.

The playlist will probably be about 60 - 65 minutes when/if we decide to add bonus songs. Right now our Version 1 is at about 47 minutes long. As for a bonus disc... I was thinking about your idea (Vs. from the 2000 Tour) as the bonus disc. This would be our final version if we decided to do this. This is what it may look like:

    Disc 1 - Track List:

    Go - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Animal - Las Vegas 11/30/93
    Daughter - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Glorified G - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Dissident - Atlanta 4/3/94
    W.M.A. - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Blood - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Rearviewmirror - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Rats - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Small Town - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Leash - Las Vegas 11/30/93
    Indifference - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Angel - '92 Bridge School
    Sonic Reducer - 4/3/94
Rockin' in the Free World - '93 MTV Music Awards

    Disc 2 - Track List:

    Go - 2000/2003
    Animal - 2000/2003
    Daughter - 2000/2003
    Glorified G - 2000/2003
    Dissident - 2000/2003
    W.M.A. - 2000/2003
    Blood - 2000/2003
    Rearviewmirror - 2000/2003
    Rats - 2000/2003
    Small Town - 2000/2003
    Leash - 2000/2003
    Indifference - 2000/2003
    Bonus Song ?
    Bonus Song ?
    Bonus Song ?

Right now we will just stick to the first disc and make sure that we can get that the way we want it. I am listening to what I am going to upload tomorrow as I type this post. It is pretty good, but it can definitely be improved upon. I am looking forward to putting it out there.

Thanks Cameron4Pres - I'm looking forward to it.

My idea about 'widening' the choice of soundboard sources was more about collecting together songs from soundboard recordings BEFORE the official bootlegs came out - to see what good stuff came out of the tours before the bootleg programme started, and to draw from there. I agree, let's get disc one as good as we can, and then have a think about where we go from there.

    kewl!

How about Leash from one of the 92 shows such as Zurich?

Also, you guys definitely need to get hold of the FM quality cut of the Ahoy, Rotterdam 93 (Is it called the 'Jeremy Live' bootleg or something??) which is a mix of the two nights and was broadcast on dutch radio. Absolutely amazing sound quality. Daughter is especially great from this show.

Or even how about using RVM or Daughter from SNL? Although saying that....is anything even remotely close to beating Atlanta for RVM?

I actually tried "Leash" from Zurich and Pink Pop '92, but when you put it right next to the sound quality of Atlanta, it just doesn't sound nearly as good.

As for Rotterdam 93, you and NorthShoreBlues both have suggested this and I have just found the bootleg of the FM broadcast (Gremmie.net has it as "Europe '93") and both of you right. So far I have only been able to listen to a couple of tracks, but wow they sound good. I can see the possibility of some of these songs making it on to our revision (AKA "Version 2"). Thank you for you suggestions.

Version 1 should be uploaded in the next hour or so. I will post a link on this thread very soon.

Overall I think that it is a B+, a little choppy in some areas, but we can definitely improve it and I see replacing some existing songs with the 93 Rotterdam show, which sounds great. Hopefully we will have Version 2 out in the next couple of days. Enjoy..

Brilliant work Cameron4President - am downloading right now. Looking forward to hearing this a lot. Thanks! Initial feedback in the next few hours.

    :D

Overall I think that it is a B+, a little choppy in some areas, but we can definitely improve it and I see replacing some existing songs with the 93 Rotterdam show, which sounds great. Hopefully we will have Version 2 out in the next couple of days. Enjoy..

OK - have done some listening, some downloading and some more listening, and here are my initial thoughts on the first part of the album.

I think having Atlanta as the core is a great idea, with by far the best sound quality and some of the best performances. I also think though that it is more interesting and rewarding for the listener to be taken to some different places, and this works and is necessary at some points more than others. Also I don't think all of the Atlanta 'performances' are necessarily the best performances - so we have to balance sound quality, performance and flow, and overall listener (PJ fan) experience.

Here's my thoughts about a provisional version two - have to go out shortly, so will come back to the second half of the album later

    Intro (Atlanta)
    Go (Atlanta)
    both A* for me

    Animal

I don't think Atlanta works here - I think we need to find a better 'animal' from somewhere!! I tried St Pete's here but agree it doesn't work due to shift in sound and clarity. I think it is easier as a listener to switch between different sources at a different tempo and rhythm

Daughter - SNL - this works really well for me here - Can we cut out the voice intro though?

    Glorified G (Atlanta)
    Dissident (Atlanta)

    Both work well here

WMA - Atlanta seems fine here - managed to miss this one out in original post - am confusing myself!!
Blood - St Pete's !! Try it, I think this could work... it does for me.

So I think if we can find a better Animal to mash things up coming out of Go, then follow this sequence - the thing starts to get pretty interesting. Try it out and hopefully you'll see what I mean.

    Thanks for listening!

Will check back in a few hours.

So here's my suggestion for the start of version 2

    Intro (Atlanta)
    Go (Atlanta)
    Animal (?????)
    Daughter (SNL)
    Glorified G (Atlanta)
    Dissident (Atlanta)
    WMA (Atlanta)
    Blood (St Pete's)

    .......

Shit, sorry Cameron4President, am completely confusing myself with all the different versions now floating around on various devices!

I see your 'Animal' is from Las Vegas.... Let me have a few more listens and post later when I have more time to get it right.

Summary of the above post might be

How about Daughter from SNL and Blood from St Pete's! ??

I'll try this alongside your version 1.

    Cheers

Try this for the first part of the collection Cameron4Pres. I think it works pretty well

    Intro (Atlanta)
    Go (Atlanta)
    Animal (Atlanta)
    Daughter (SNL)
    Glorifed G (Atlanta)
    Dissident (Atlanta)
    WMA (Atlanta)
    Blood (St Pete's)

There might be an argument for switching Dissident or WMA to a different source, if there is a good one to be found, but not if there isn't!

I don't know if you listen to Donny's Podcast "All That's Sacred", but he has a saying "I'm going to have to call an audible on that". I am going to have to call an audible on the "Daughter" suggestion. I agree that we should change that version, but let's change it with the "Rotterdam '93" version instead of SNL. We will try the first few like this:

    Intro (Atlanta)
    Go (Atlanta)
    Animal (Atlanta)
    Daughter (Rotterdam '93)
    Glorifed G (Atlanta)
    Dissident (Atlanta)
    WMA (Atlanta)
    Blood (St Pete's)

Also, I am willing to try the St. Pete "Blood", but I am a little apprehensive about doing so. I believe that the sound will be a huge factor, be we will test it out and I will PM you with that version. It will be a "Version 1.2" :D .

Edit: Let's scratch the St. Pete "Blood" and replace it with Las Vegas "Blood" instead. I think that this will sound better. We will put this on the "Version 2" release and scrap the 1.2 Version that I was going to PM you.

    Intro (Atlanta)
    Go (Atlanta)
    Animal (Atlanta)
    Daughter (Rotterdam '93)
    Glorifed G (Atlanta)
    Dissident (Atlanta)
    WMA (Atlanta)
    Blood (Las Vegas)

This looks good - I will load it up and give it a listen shortly. I think we are trying to balance the 'mood' of the thing with the sound quality issues, and the different preferences people have. I liked the SNL daughter because it brings back memories, has quite a different mood from the original, and as mentioned has an amazing 'outro' thing. Also I enjoy it when the overall effect of the songs flowing together has an effect on me - so even if there isn't the most 'perfect' performance or production at that point in the mix, if it changes the mood a bit or gives a particular spin to the collection, than I sometimes favour that over super high clarity etc. But I agree, it can also be distracting when the levels or sound quality fluctuates too wildly. This is hard!! Much harder to do than the backspacer ones, for a number of reasons.....

I'll make up this version 2 and give it a run through. Thanks for the contributions people, and thanks again Cameron4President for pulling it together.

Hi - is sounding really good. I have made a few changes to my version of this which I think improves things even more. I'll give a brief explanation of why I think so after my suggested tracklist for V3:

    Intro (Atlanta)
    Go (Atlanta)
    Animal (Atlanta)
    Daughter (SNL '94)
    Glorifed G (Atlanta)
    Dissident (Las Vegas)
    WMA (Atlanta)
    Blood (Las Vegas)
    Rearviewmirror - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Rats - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Small Town - Atlanta 4/3/94
    Leash (Rotterdam '93)
    Indifference - Indio, CA 11/5/93

    General

I think every time we move away from the core Atlanta set it takes the listener on a bit of a 'journey' to a different vibe, different place, and every time we come back to Atlanta it underlines how strong the performances are in this show, and works especially on some of the heavier and 'funkier' numbers.

    DIssident

I think this Las Vegas version is a really good one, with some of Ed's clearest vocals on this song that I've heard. The Atlanta version is super well known, and this version would help with the 'diversity' issue, and whilst it is not the most 'powerful' version, most of the Atlanta versions of other songs are very powerful - and so I think this balances it well. I think this alternative version is good enough to be considered.

    Indifference

I like this version a lot, coming at the end of a famous show, very moody - closes the album well. I think the listener can cope with the shift from Leash; this is a softer sound, but it is a moodier song. I also think we are bound to want to draw on this show for some of the bonus elements - since it has some famous moments - such as 'shoe the shoeless', and I think is a good reminder of the times, which is one of the things we're trying to capture, alongside the best sound production.

    What do you guys think?

I have just completed Version 2. It will be up and ready on the site in about 15 minutes from now. I have given it a quick listen through and I think that it sound awesome, a lot better than Version 1. Let's all give it a good listen and discuss possible changes tomorrow. I am not opposed to swapping out "Dissident", but as much as I like the Indio show, I don't think that it is going to work on the compilation.

I will post a link very soon...

    Thanks, great stuff!

Am just listening thru properly now and agree the other dissident doesn't work as well as Atlanta, cos it is too 'flat'. I haven't got to my alternative indifference yet... ;)

I have a possible title tho!
