  • That's a really cool looking guitar. :D And the ZZ Top remark isn't really that far fetched.

I was stone-cold serious, dude. Have you ever seen Billy's guitar collection? If you're gonna play a hot-pink guitar like that, you either gotta wear some spandex (warrant, poison, etc), or you just gotta OWN it, like Billy would do. Like, "What, I'm playin' a pink guitar, so what?"

Or, you could get a sharpie and draw some boobs on the wings, and tell everyone you're fighting breast cancer with your guitar. Or put some glow-in-the-dark stars on it like McCready's Ibanez.

But seriously, I would just play the guitar, and let everyone think you're just comfortable with your sexuality enough to play a pink guitar and not give a shit.

I know you were serious. That's the good thing about it. Playing a guitar like that on stage requires balls and attitute. And Billy cerainly has both.

Oh, and gimmesometruth, uncle dave seems to have my Lemmy bass in stock!

it does require balls and attitude. that is why i gigged it several times...

you should really see what dave is asking for it. he is a good dude and knows his shit and is really fair. he is an editor for the vintage guitar blue book or pricing guide whatever it's called these days. what is on his website is only part of what he has. he has so much cool shit coming and going in his shops that many times before they can even get pics on the site the stuff is gone. a few months ago he drove to nashville to hand deliver a vintage gibson 335 to vince gill because he lost his in the flooding. and one time i was in there and kirk hammett called him to buy a 59 strat. kirk, gibbons, and keith richards and the guys from buckcherry buy shit from him all of the time. so he is a good guy to know i guess.

Dave Hinson. he is my bass player's uncle who is a well known vintage guitar dealer who has 2 shops here in st. louis. he has sold us alot of our stuff and because his nephew is in my band we call him "uncle dave" to give him a hard time and make him feel old....he is a great guy who has taken good care of my band the last several years, and he comes up and plays with us on occasion. he is our guitar tech and his amp guy who makes Reason amplifiers is our amp tech. here are his bios..

no i used to have severe anxiety issues before playing our first 20 shows or so. i would be locked in the bathroom just freaking out. i thought i had IBS or crohn's or something. eventually i got over it because it got easier, and part of that was thinking in the back of my head "i am going to get on that stage in front of a few hundred people and play a pink flying v..... nobody else would do that...." so that really helped my confidence....so in a way playing that thing out took balls, and i discovered that i had them..

  • I know the feeling. The first few shows that I played I was going through similar stuff. Then I convinced myself to stop taking it all seriously. I really don't know how i managed to actually do that, but it worked and I'm really glad it did. Now I'm a lot more relaxed on stage and can actually geniunly enjoy a gig even if it's not the best. Sometimes even so much it pisses off my bandmates but I can live with that. Way better than the alternative. I also tried alcohol a few times. But we all know how well that works.
Doing it by playing a guitar like that is a great idea. You should think about renting it out as some kind of therapy guitar. I'm almost positive it would've worked for me and probably even would've saved a bit of my hair...

i know all about alcohol to allegedly stop anxiety. my first show i was 8 beers deep before i strummed my first chord. granted i only had two or three more over the course of the 3 sets, but those beers were the only thing that would settle the butterflies in my stomach and stop my knees from shaking enough for me to walk out onto the stage and perform for a couple hundred people and look them in the eye...man i used to get so damn nervous..looking back now it is pretty cool to see that i can walk out onstage to a few hundred people stone sober and play a whole show if i wanted to. but it is fun to have a shot or two or a few beers with the boys to loosen things up a bit. i think that the more you gig and the more comfortable in front of a crowd you get, the less seriously you take your band and yourself. we used to be very serious, mistakes or fat fingering a few chords was severely lfrowned upon, now we joke on the mikes alot of the time. it keeps things loose and it is great to know you can make an audience rock their ass off and then laugh their ass off right after.

that is a great idea about making it a therapy guitar. i am sure there are nervous anxious "headcases" that are a lot worse than i ever was that can maybe benefit from playing that guitar in front of people...
