WM3 NEWS: Damien Echols' Oral Argument in front of the Arkansas State Supreme Court Thursday, September 30th

On Thursday, September 30th at 9:00 AM Central, Damien Echols' attorneys will present oral arguments in front of the Arkansas State Supreme Court. These arguments contend that DNA testing and other powerful forensic evidence -- combined with a sworn affidavit that the original jury foreman engaged in blatant misconduct that contributed to the jury's decision -- prove that Echols was wrongfully convicted of the 1993 murders of Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers in West Memphis, Arkansas. Based on this newly discovered evidence, Echols is seeking a new and fair trial.

Stream the proceedings live at 9:00 AM Central:

Upon the hearing's conclusion, supporters will carry a massive banner of "Free the WM3" postcards from all over the world from the ASSC to the steps of the Capitol building.

Best of luck to the WM3 and all their loved ones.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
  • I hope that the supporters of the WM3 don't forget about the other WM3...the ones that are no longer living...and are very respectful if they show up.

Thanks for this - from following a lot of the West Memphis 3 discussion recently it seems obvious that there is firm grounds for a retrial; hopefully this Supreme Court argument will clear the ground to offer Echols a fairer hearing.

Got to work this morning only to see Eddie's face greeting me on the cover of my local newspaper (which I than stole from my work place and now I'm keeping it forever). What a wonderful way to start the morning! There's also a vigil tonight in Little Rock with "special guest" :? , but I don't think I will be able to make it since it's middle of the week. I would love to attend the vigil.

Thanks for the tread. Wishing the best of luck to the WM3.
  • thinking about this a lot lately

fighting against injustice is pretty much my fave noble cause

good on pj/ev and all those involved everywhere

    hope exists
  • Here is a poem (I posted on other forum a few weeks ago). I wrote it for the WM3. I hope that they see justice. This makes me sick.

    WM3

    Take me as I am
    with the dust filled history
    of youths violent swarm.

I stood in the streetlight glow
    and breathed life hard.
I threw my arms to the sky and I screamed “NOW!!”

But this is just a memory

A sharp towering building crashed down
and swept with it, my honor.

    The door slammed shut.

    Echoing.

I sink so low on days when the sun comes in
through tiny cracks in the concrete cell.

I am shackled at the ankles.

I am shackled as the world spins around.

I am shackled and I am innocent.

    Take me as I am.
    For, I am like you.

    I dream of freedom.

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

I know I'd be respectful if people who were no longer living showed up! ;)

Anyway, I sure hope justice - whatever that may be - prevails. And I hope we will actually know for certain that it has prevailed.

So do people have internet access in prison? Just wondering. (I'm thinking probably not.)

I'm already halfway through 30th Sept. The day is just beginning for Damien Echols and all those involved in the trial today. I wonder if he was able to sleep or rest at all. I really hope so. Even though he will not be present in court today, I can only begin to imagine the wrenching in his guts at the thought of what is happening today.

Although I'm feeling down myself today and facing my own challenges, I'd like to send all my hope to Damien and my strength to those fighting for his cause today. My thoughts are with you. May justice prevail and be restored so others like Damien, Jason & Jessie will also be afforded some hope.

Just watched the oral arguments presented and it just seems like such a no-brainer. The state really looked like it was trying to be obstructive as a matter of pride. I really think they just don't want to admit they made mistakes. Riordan did a good job, although I was hoping he would say more on the false confessions since the state and the public seem to be relying heavily on that. I really hope good things come from today's hearing.
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

I don't get it. I haven't had a chance to watch today's arguments, but I can't find anything about the results. When will we know the court's decision? I guess they have to take some time to think about it.
  • Arguments have concluded. It seems as though the Justices will render a decision on this in 2-3 weeks. You can read more about it here.

What admission by Damien is the state's lawyer talking about?
  • __ Posts: 6,657
Our criminal justice system is such a fucking joke. It's like a big game - only people's lives are at stake.

I just watched the arguments and think they had good points on both sides. I'm glad I'm not a judge. It kind of seemed like they were leaning toward the defense though. Does anyone else feel that way?

I just finished watching the archived video and I was wondering the same too. The only thing that comes to mind is the hearsay evidence that he had said, whilst at a softball game, that he did it and already has another victim picked out. If that's what they mean, that's a very shaky leg to stand on.

    Now we wait.

Oh yeah - that's probably what they meant. Smart thinking! (I hadn't really thought of that as a confession, personally.)
