Yeah, I don't get it and I'm a big fan of his.
    ...
His basic point is... you aren't going to find many Americans willing to get up at dawn, get driven to a bean field and spend over 8 hours in the blazing Sun to crawl on all fours, picking beans for the wages they are being paid.

I understand what he is arguing but I just don't get how testifying in character is helpful.

I guess it's the message, not the messenger, that's important.
Plus... it was funny and kind of shows how far out of touch some of our representatives are with basic American culture. I mean, I do not expect them to know about every aspect of American culture, but they do employ a small army of interns and assistants to clue them in on who Stephen Clobert is.
It makes a joke out of what Congress has become... because Congress is a joke.
Also, Elmo from Sesame Street remained in character when he spoke to Congress.

  • Colbert was also drawing attention to the issue, as we are talking about it now...

    Plus, its hilarious.

The man is brilliant! And he has a big heart. He's doing more for what's good for this country than most of the people we've elected. You go, Colbert!!!

 It was funnier watching it a 2nd time because I wasn't struck at how odd it all was. His White House Correspondents Dinner speech was funnier and more brutal in its attack, but this one is pretty damn good too.

How can the Republicans claim they take education seriously after having Elmo testify?

The joke is... people like yourself that fails to get the joke. You cry about the Illegals taking your jobs... are you willing to pick beans at the current wages being offered? Do you know anyone willing to do that?

The only thing I cry about is that people are getting away with breaking the law...

The illegals are not taking our jobs, the jobs aren't even available to us because we (citizens) are required to be paid at least minimum wage by law. Let's enforce the labor laws and make these farms play by the rules and then we can answer the question "Are Ameicans willing to pick beans?" And if the answer is no, it begs another question: Is it acceptable to treat exploit any group of human beings, citizens or not, as an economic sub-class in our society?"
