What are your favorite songs of the 1990's?

A few weeks back Pitchfork had a list of their top 200 songs of the 1990's.

I am looking for peoples opinion on here as to what they would include in their own lists.

obviously this list will include alot of grunge music, pj, nirvana, soundgarden and alice, but i'm looking for an extensive list from people, not just the usual suspects.

the thing about music in the 90's was how well it held up, and how even the pop tunes like Goo Goo's Name or Verve Pipe's The Freshmen, hell even a pop song like Sonny Came Home, or Hands by Jewel, even putting on 3rd eye blind nowadays you look back and "wow even the mainstream pop rock scene was brilliant". All are extremely evocative and beautiful in a way music isnt these days.

What were some of the best songs and albums of the 90's? Best rock albums and songs? best pop songs and albums?

i'm talking a song like One Headlight. A song that you hear it now, in 2010, and you are transported back, what is it now 14 years back to who you were in 1996/1997 and how you felt.

For pop - I got cheesy in the 90's, beside my devotion to grunge, I liked -

    4 non blondes - What's Going On
    Hum - Stars
Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth
Lisa Loeb, Natalie Imbruglia, might be the same person but had a good song each.

I guess this list is more apt for one hit wonders, but those are on my iphone for 90's music.

Yeah, One Headlight is one of those songs that takes me back. Here are a few more 'time-travellers' or 'one hit wonders' that should make the list:

    Banditos - The Refreshments
Til I Hear It From You - Gin Blossoms (remember 'Empire Records'? ;) )
Anything by The Tea Party (esp 'Correspondences, Sister Awake, The River, Temptation' and 'The Messenger')
Dammit - Blink 182 (hate the band, love the song)
Holy Grail - Hunters and Collectors (if you haven't got this one, get it now!)
Lose Control - Ash (ah yes... Gran Turismo 1 much peeps?)
Stupid Girl - Garbage (and for that matter, Only Happy When It Rains, Special, Push It, Vow...)
Anything from Massive Attacks album 'Mezzanine', especially 'Angel' or 'Teardrop'
    Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai
    Celebrity Skin - Hole

and some for the NZers out there...
    Scorpio Girls - Supergroove
    Cruise Control - Headless Chickens
    A Day Away - Shihad
'The General Electric' - Shihad (this album is one is worth getting from iTunes for sure)
    Venus - The Feelers
    Blind - Tadpole
Anchor Me - The Mutton Birds

Yeah that one makes my list. Wonderful song.
I did like that pitchfork only used one song per artist.

I don't know if I'll have time to put a list together but I did not understand how their list did not include:
    Enter Sandman- Metallica

That was one of the biggest songs of the 90's!

    Some other smaller favs:
    Girlfriend- Mathew Sweet
    Windfall- Son Volt
Nearly Lost You There- Screaming Trees
    Epic- Faith No More
    Without a Trace- Soul Asylum
    Hey Jealosy- Gin Blossoms
    Possum Kingdom- The Toadies
    Under the Bridge- RHCP
    Far Behind- Candlebox
    Honeysucklebloom- Drivin N Cryin
    Jesus Built my Hotrod- Ministry
    Low-Cracker
Walk on the Ocean- Toad the Wet Sprocket
Circle- Big Head Todd & the Monsters
    Round Here- Counting Crows
    Doin the cockaroach- Modest Mouse
    Broken Chairs- Built to SPill

I could go on but i'll stop and those are far from my favs just off the top of my head (except the last two they would be top 20 songs i'm sure)

great tune, also on my iphone for 90's music, and I suppose also falls under the wonder hit wonder, though the lead singer, Hope Sandoval, I think went on to a solo independent thing, but good call!

    NICE!!!
    To add to this:
    George - Headless Chickens
    How Bizarre - OMC
Weather With You - Crowded House
    Violent - Stellar*

And the rest of the world
You Ougtha Know - Alanis Morrisette
    Stupid Girl - Garbage
Just A Girl - No Doubt
    Numb - Portishead
    Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
    Iris - Goo Goo Dolls

And of course anything by Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, AIC, Faith No More, Sound Garden etc. etc. The 90's were an awesome time for all music! The pop wasn't too cheesy (well thats a lie - after all Britney, Spice Girls, etc came from the late 90's) of course rock music was brilliant! and even RnB wasn't too bad - I remember slow dancing to Boys to Men at a school dance... I think it has a lot to do with it being my teenage years and that music started to be such a big part of my life.
