Did Dave Krusen quit or get fired?

I am listening to DITP right now, and I was wondering why Dave K didn't come back to the band after Dave A got fired. I checked wikipedia (yes, I know, gimme a break!), and there's a quote in there from Dave K himself saying this:

After the recording sessions for Ten were completed, Krusen left Pearl Jam in May 1991 and checked himself into rehabilitation.[4] According to Krusen, he was suffering from personal problems at the time.[4] Krusen said, "It was a great experience. I felt from the beginning of that band that it was something special," and added, "They had to let me go. I couldn't stop drinking, and it was causing problems. They gave me many chances, but I couldn't get it together."

Does that mean:

-'they had to let me leave'?

or

-'they had to fire me'?

I was always under the impression he quit.

From the words "let me go" it's possible there was an 'intervention' of some type. "Hey man, we love ya, but the drinking is really getting in the way of the band's creative influences. We can't have that, please get some help"

They gave him chances, so I'd believe they were all on good terms.

The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

that's basically what happened and yes he's still on friendly terms with the band. dave k a few years back performed a few songs with a pj cover band called dirty frank. both him and the band were actually good together.

he's a good guy, he was at one of the MSG shows this year, and I met up with him afterwards downtown...he's still clean and sober and a very nice and friendly guy.

I know a guy that was in a seattle band from that era (nothing big. can't even remember their name). but he knew the guys in PJ and was pretty good friends with krusen and said he was drinking and drugging a ton, and that was the end. not sure if he meant he got kicked out or had to quit though.

He played drums in Hovercraft in the mid-90's (he plays on their first album), so I guess Ed at least was probably still seeing him around at that time.

    Seems like he got fired.
It also seemed like he relapsed around the time Dave A got the can - so that might be why he didn't come back. That and it seems like they REALLY wanted Irons in the band.

It was definitely Krusen and not Dave A.

Yes he did. He plays on their "Happy Pills" album (this album had some awesome songs).

He also did a few tracks on the latest "Into the sun" but Scott Mercado (original drummer played on some and did the tour). I was really hoping Krusen was drumming on the tour. It would have been awesome to meet him.
their original drummer Scott, is cool too though and is an awesome drummer as well.

"Into the sun" is pretty good, but Happy Pills and candlebox albums are by far Candlebox's best.

Dave discusses this pretty frankly on the podcast -- I found it riveting. If you want to check it out, listen to ATS #59. I also did a follow up interview to discuss what he's been up to since leaving the band on ATS #61.
