the loudness war

has pearl jam fallen victim to this?
to be honest, i can't hear THAT much of a difference between a cd from 1990 and 2009.... it does sound louder, but when people say that it sounds awful i can't say that i totally agree. maybe it's because i became HUGE into music over the last few years (after the war started) so i wasn't there for the transition.
i personally always thought pearl jams cds sounded pretty good production wise (with the exception of "self titled".. there's something off about that one).

Well that might depend on your sound system.
Because "loudness war" discs CANNOT BE PLAYED LOUD without distorting and slashing at your ears. Non "loudness war" discs can be played at any volume and will always sound clear and dynamic (like "Yield" or "Binaural" for example). Your choices as an audio consumer are limited with "loudness war" discs because they've already made the disc loud for you. There is no option for audiophiles. It's the same reason there is a big vinyl boom right now. The truth is that vinyl sucks as a medium, but because of the loudness wars, people are turning to vinyl as an alternative and record companies are cashing in big, lisencing albums to audiophile vinyl labels. Audiophile gold discs too. If there wasn't an unwritten rule these days that discs must be loud and crappy sounding, there wouldn't be a need for any of that nonsense. It's all a big scam. And Pearl Jam is a part of it. The "Backspacer" vinyl is amongst the worst I've ever heard...it sounds almost exactly like the CD (slghtly worse in fact)...because it's a cash grab rather than a true audiophile product.
No, it does not.
