Can we can reach some kind of consensus on this one? I need this song on my mp3 player!

A lot of the best ones are from the 2000 tour I think

Ooh wow, I'd love to hear a consensus on this. I love every version of this song really but interested to hear.

I actually know what you mean but i JUST remembered about Newcastle, Australia 2006 with little wing at the end, it's brilliant.

Gorge 2006, the first night. Both Little Wing and Star-Spangled Banner. Little Wing has the band a bit.

That tune, well, a live version of it played by The Hamsters, and far too many bottles of Steinlager, are the reason I'm partially deaf in my left ear, I ended up right next to the PA when it was being played.

Personally, I prefer YL without tags, though Cowboy Song was a great choice in Dublin.

actually I was thinking about this today. Listening to the Hyde Park version Ed sings 'I DO want to stay yeah f$%k it I'll stay' and I was wondering how often he sings that in YL as I cannot remember hearing it in any of the 30 or so boots I have. Anyone have any idea, have I just missed it in the past?

    This!

Finally got to hear it live at MSG2, and it was amazing.

Gotta agree with the Gorge YL with the two tags. Beautiful to listen to.

  • the versions in the US 2000 tour are really sweet. The riffs that Mike plays in the end of Van Halen, Thin Lizzy songs, for example... are awesome. I really miss these days.

No need for tags, just the most trancendental outro to YL I've ever heard. Just beautiful.

Or if you have to have a tag, you can't do better Hololulu 2006, which erupts into a full version of Little Wing, complete with vocals. Amazing.

But yes, I agree - Star-Spangled Banner makes my skin crawl. Completely misses the point of what Hendrix was trying to do with it.

And what was Hendrix trying to do? Seems to me he's doing the same as Hendrix.

Deconstructing the song most symbolic of American national pride into the sound effects of the war that was (at that time anyway) most symbolic of America's shame.

And that is the same thing McCready has been doing since 2006(?) with the Iraq War. They were against the Iraq War just like Hendrix was against the Vietnam War.

Yes, I get that, but I don't think it comes across as a statement from Mike, the way it did from Hendrix - it sounds more like Mike just trying to emulate Hendrix. Hendrix's version was raging, despairing, angst-ridden, confused - Mike's ends up sounding celebratory (even if YL is an anti-war song).

Though I guess you could make a case for it...

Also, Mike is paying tribute to Hendrix because we all know how big of an influence Hendrix was to him.

I would have to say the BEST is the one on the Daughter single. It is from the Nov 6, 1993 Mesa, AZ. In the beginning when Eddie says "Were getting Yellow Leadbetter request. We can play that." The lyrics he sings in this version are great also. This has to be the best. Just once I wish Eddie would do the studio lyrics live. Just once and I hope I'm there :D

I'm partial to the Tibetan Freedom Concert version with just Ed and Mike, but that's me - I like the simply stripped-down feel to it.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Honestly, my favorite Yellow Ledbetter is the studio version. It's the perfect closer, but that studio version is beyond beautiful. It's a perfect piece of music to me.
