Listened to Sleight of Hand last night, so many sounds I never heard before came out of my headphones.
I really need to listen to this album more on my walkman.

Isn't that a cool feeling when you listen to an album (one that you listened to many times before), and you hear something that you have never noticed. I love the Binaural album. I have never understood why that album doesn't get more respect. Maybe because it folowed Yield? I don't know, but it is a great disc and it sounds good on headphones.

where to start??only with headphones you get how brilliant are the drums in God's dice,in Thin Air is like you are in the beach..in Off the Girl sounds coming from everywhere like its a 3D sound....
and dont talk about Nothing as it seems..this song is a miracle..only God can do those..

I think it gets less respect as the album should be listened to as it was intended (through headphones) so it isn't the best throw on and rock out album, also it has off beats in many of the songs (paticularly Sleight of Hand), which means it feels strange until you are used to the rhythm. I think many people class it as a weak album, as they have not allowed themselves to become accustomed. It also suffers from the Vitalogy/No Code problems, as an album that is tonally very different from the previous one.

I was lucky to go to Wembley for the Binaural tour in 2000 and was blown away by the live renditions of the songs, but as much as I liked it, it has taken a long time to gain respect from the masses. I think that it ranks up there with one of the best albums of the time, experimental, epic, personal and Mike is all over the album.

Classics are discovered over time, and I think that this one will gain more and more respect as the years go by, I also think the same of Riot Act, but I love all the albums so.....

When I first heard it I didn't it love it.
It has since grown on me a big way and I now rank it right up there.
I love it's atmosphere and mood, it just takes me someplace else.
It is bedtime now, time to listen to it!
    Good night! 8-)

I love "Nothing as it Seens" live. One of my favorite PJ tunes. You make some great points about album. It is definitely an incredible listen on headphones.

All good reasons, but, in my mind, the catalyst for this album being a classic has to be Matt FUCKING Cameron - this is his first studio recording for Pearl Jam (not including Temple of the Dog); and what about his jazz-influenced 3/4 timing? ... pure bliss, my friends, pure bliss.

Cameron has made a huge difference in studio, (as each drummer has in turn shaped the sound of the band while they were in it) and I think your right on the money about Binaural.

  • I'm sure most people alread know this but for those that don't here's a link to explain just what Binaural recording (the technique) is that Pearl Jam used on the middle section of Binaural (the album):

    Basically 3-d for your ears!

I agree, Matt is much more than just a drummer for them. He has become a huge part of the band.

there's been a few threads about this top over the last few years which makes me think i should go buy headphones so i can see what everyone is talking about. question though... would i need to listen to it on vinyl to get the full experience, or would listening it through my ipod be good enough?

I loved this album the first time through! Parting Ways is a top 10 song for me. Light Years, Nothing As It Seems, Grievance, Rival, and Sleight of Hand are all GEMS. I don't think I've ever listened to it on headphones before though I'll have to give it a try thanks for the heads up!

+1. did it and it was great. I have been wondering how it would be to listen to on acid...

I think I'll lay down on my bed and listen to this genius album with headphones again on the iPod.
