Passport - US into Canada

I am pretty sure that you do not need a passport to get into Canada from the US until summer of 2009. But a couple people I work with are insistent that I will need one for when I go to the Ed Solo show in Toronto.
I think they may be messing with me but can somebody here on the boards ease my mind and reassure that I do not need a passport yet?

From the Department of Homeland Security website: http://www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/
Traveling from US to Canada
Air Travel: Passport required
Land/Sea Travel: Valid Photo ID
I would review the website to confirm you'll be ok.PJ

the answer is YES if travelling by air, you'll need a passport to enter the US. the answer is NO if crossing the border by land. DHS will require passports from US citizens crossing Canadian and Mexican borders starting on June 1, 2009.To quote the 10C from Newsletter #8: "Please understand we have a lot of members and it is very hard to please everybody. If you are one of those unhappy people...please call 1-900-IDN-TCAR."

Thanks - I will be driving so shouldn't be a problem. I will have to tell me co-workers to bite it!the sorrow grows bigger, when the sorrow's denied0

You may not need one right now, but I'd go ahead and apply for it, especially if you like to travel. IMO having a passport is less of a hassle and easier to recover from if it's lost/stolen.0

A couple of months. But you can expedite it down to a week or two by paying an extra fee.

Wow. Really? It only takes a few weeks to get one in Canada!<a href="http://www.last.fm/user/Krisdababe/?chartstyle=Krisdababe"><img src="http://imagegen.last.fm/Krisdababe/recenttracks/Krisdababe.gif" border="0" /></a>

I just got one for my daughter.
Paid the express mail and expedited fee and we received it nine days later.
Go to your post office and talk to the passport agent.0 -
Last year when part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was being rolled out it was taking many months to get a passport because there was such a spike in demand, but times are much shorter now. The post office or State may quote a two month timeline in the interest of being safe, but I would bet you could get it back in no more than three weeks without paying the fees to expedite.98-KC; 00-Indianapolis, StL, KC; 03-KC, DC; 04-DC; 06-Camden2, DC, Pittsburgh; 08-DC; 09-Chicago1, Spectrum3; 10-DC; 13-Baltimore; 16-Chicago1; 18-Seattle2; 22-NY; 23-St Paul1&2, Chicago1; 24-Chicago2, NY1, Baltimore0

Guess we're back on track now and it's shorter. When I had to renew last year, it took almost 3 months to get mine.0 -

Im sorry, but your first post?
Thought you were deciding if you should take a passport or not and not actually needing a passport.0 -
If you have a passport, take it, even if you're driving. Always better to be safe than sorry. When I drove down to the US from Toronto, my friend only had her Nova Scotia driver's licence and the border guard said that a licence doesn't prove you were born in Canada (for instance), which is true. You should take your birth certificate too, just to be on the safe side (if you don't have a passport).
From my experience, Canadian immigration is nowhere near as brutal as US immigration... as an Aussie living in Canada for 3.5 years there were times they didn't even look at my passport or check my work visa over the land borders... but you never know who you'll strike.Glaciers melting in the dead of night and the superstars sucked into the supermassive.0
