I think unless you are the one who wrote it, then your interpretation of the song is merely that....your interpretation. Music is like a rorschach test. Different people see different things, all valid, though different.0

Anyone who is interested in the music enough to read this massive review is also so entrenched that they have allready developed some strong interpretations that are not served by this one person's analysis. I didn't see any mention about a line in Rival that I think holds the entire meaning of the song for instance.0

I'm the author of the review that got posted here. A little bit of context
This was not written all at once. i did one song a day, so that I wouldn't go insane and so the board would have time to discuss it. These were meant to be conversation starters as much as anything else, and the dialogue in the thread is what makes doing something like this worthwhile. Some really great and insightful discussions about the record. But as some of you said, this is an attempt to have a different kind of conversation about a record, rather than the usual 'this song is awesome/this song sucks' thread. Some of us have been listening to these albums for close to 20 years, and so it's usually fun to try something different.
Obviously this is my interpretation of the record. I am not claiming to have any inside knowledge
I was not taking shots at Riot Act as a bad record. When I talk about Riot Act I'm discussing it as a particular work of art. I think Riot Act sounds defeated, but I think that is an artistic choice.
These threads in general are about trying to understand an album on its own terms. A lot of the songs that are really crucial to the record I never listen to. Truth be told, Binaural is towards the bottom of the back for me (My favorites are Ten, Vs, Vitalogy, and Backspacer, which I think is fantastic)
For those of you who felt this was pretentious, so be it (I laughed at the pitchfork comment--I hate that magazine). I'd prefer to think of it as not selling the fan community short.
If you liked this, I've written similar reviews for Red Mosquito for S/T, Ten, Vitalogy, and Riot Act (I think in that order). there are also threads by other people on Yield and No Code.
