Why does Ed bring his notebook on stage?

Ok, so we've all seen him carry out the notebook, drop it or lay it down on the floor in front of him, and then pick it up before he leaves the stage... but why?

1. Is it just in case he has thoughts about new lyrics while he is on stage? Inspired by some member of the crowd 8-)

2. Is it because he doesn't want to take a chance of someone stealing it from wherever they keep their belongings while on stage?

3. Some other reason?

I believe I had read that one of his early notebooks was stolen once. So, it would make sense to have it at his side the whole time to avoid that. ...but maybe someone could say if that's an accurate story.

I thought certain song lyrics were printed in there, for when he forgets them. Then again, if that were the case, he wouldn't still flub so many lyrics.

I would imagine so that no one swipes it, I mean he never picks it up after he sets it down, just when he walks off stage!

I always wondered the same thing!

6-25-92 Stockholm show is the one where his notebook got stolen. Horrible outcome to an amazing show.

I've seen him actually using it :) So i didn't think it was strange that he brought it on the stage 8-)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgorEV61yGw

But i would say this is the main reason

I remember at the 4/5/03 show in San Antonio, they took the stage and Ed opened his notebook before setting it down. They opened with Of the Girl and I thought I noticed him glancing down at the notebook periodically. So it could be for lyrics, I suppose, among other things.

Ah... here's something from some PJ comic book:

"The story begins with a rendering of the Pearl Jam concert in Stockholm, Sweden in 1992, where after the show, the band discovers that many of their personal items were stolen from their locker room, including several of Eddie Vedder’s notebooks in which he kept personal musings and ideas for lyrics and songs that he jotted down. he uses it sometimes for songs that are rarely played or reworked or cover songs that he doesn't know. few times i've seen it opened and him taking a quick glance at it.

you can see him looking at his notebook a bit
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
    Sammi: Wanna just break up?

I thought it is there to help with lyrics.

Another mention of Stockholm, in the Cameron Crowe Rolling Stone interview:

The previous night in Stockholm, Sweden, Vedder explains, the band had played a longer show than usual. A group of Americans had reportedly broken into the dressing room and, among other things, stolen Vedder's lyrics and journals. He had intended to give them away at the end of the tour, just as he'd done on an earlier European visit (with a backpack personalized by handwritten accounts of each show). But the theft weighed on him; it felt like a breach of trust, a bad omen. For Vedder, it was a metaphor for the growing success of Pearl Jam. The band about which Ament had once written, "Add water, watch Pearl Jam grow," was growing wildly, far beyond the small-scale plans for a small-scale debut. "It made us feel like playing those huge shows maybe wasn't as important as we thought it was," says Ament. "We packed our bags, and we left the next morning."

  • I've seen video (I think it was Philly) where he had a stand with lyrics (keywords) printed and at the end of each page, he pulled it off, crumpled it up and pitched it down. I didn't think he actually used his notebook for these.

I think one of things he uses it for is things that he says to the crowd during the gig. You know if he has heard something or seen during the day etc. I have no doubt the things he said before Hitchhiker in Manchester last year were things he wrote down in his notebook.
