Both are great songs, which do you prefer, and why?

Footsteps. Some of my favorite lyrics in a PJ song.

"i've got scratches all over my arms, one for each day since i fell apart"
"and if there's something you'd like to do, just let me continue to blame you"
"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

    times of trouble

    why: cornell's voice
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
    Sammi: Wanna just break up?

    This is a hard one...

Footsteps: "I've got scratches all over my arms, one for each day since i fell apart"

    I can wholeheartedly support this^^^

Times of Trouble: "If somebody left you out on a ledge. If somebody pushed you over the edge. If somebody loved you and left you for dead..."

    But damn if I can't support this^^^

I'd probably go with Times of Trouble, but in the end, just because I heard it first. Either way it's a patented Gossard Win®!

I personally can't decide myself, prob the reason I started this topic. Just listened to Times of Trouble today, I remember hearing this first and liking it over footsteps. However with time I have become so big a pearl jam fan and in love with footsteps myself that I can't say. Footsteps seems more touching however the way times of trouble builds up to "if somebody..." is probably the best part of the two.

Both. Because they describe some wonderful pictures.

Footsteps: "Footsteps in the hall... It was you, you.
Ooh, pictures on my chest... It was you. It was you..."

Times Of Trouble: "I saw you swinging
    Swinging your mother's sword".

Now that I'm thinking again, I would probably say Times Of Trouble.

I'll go with Times of Trouble, but both are awesome

Footsteps. I think it's a lot better musically. The piano in Times of Trouble makes it kind of open-ended. Just my opinion. Both great!
Do you see the way that tree bends? Does it inspire?

I love both, but if I had to make a choice I think it would probably be Times Of Trouble. Chris Cornell's voice is unbelievable on that album, and Times Of Trouble is definitely one of the best songs on it.

I wish Cornell would bust this song out at one of his solo shows, I'd kill to hear it live.

I went to a couple of Cornell solo shows a few years ago, and he called me out from the second row at my first show for the shirt i was wearing. When he saw me two nights later wearing the same shirt, he asked me what I wanted to hear to which i replied "Times of Trouble"....he smiled, and said They {his touring band} can't play that one.

I LOVE footsteps, but Times of Trouble is probably my favorite off of Temple of the Dog, and Temple of the Dog is probably in my top three records of all time.

I gotta lean towards Footsteps, while the riff is the same and Mike has said it was the inspiration. Times is about heroin and death and while that is part of life and the tune its too sad and dark. Not that Footsteps is uplifting but I think its about a girl who sucks.... Although I heard on the DVD its about Stone and Eddie fighting.. To each their own, but I would rather blame someone than drift away _

I heard Footsteps long before Times Of Trouble. Both excellent songs of course, but I slightly prefer the latter, because of Chris' singing.

And mine. Wouldn't it be great if PJ played Footsteps at one of their shows, then bring out Cornell to do ToT? The mere thought makes me drool.

I think I would definitely have to go with Times Of Trouble. Both are excellent songs, but as a few people have said already, Cornell just owned on the ToTD album, probably one of my top albums of all time as well. Footsteps is a touching song though, I was fortunate enough to hear it live at the Newark show about a month ago. Man this was a tough call!
