They didn't necessarily believe it was an end to humans, but rather a conscious transition.. wether it be a greater awareness of the universe, contact with alien life, merging of dimensions, who knows..

I put my money on that it simply, by their system, was a convenient place to end "an age", and that another would start immediately. Kindof how we turn the calendar and start over every year, but think it's something extra every 100 and 1000 years.

Seems "end of days" is believed to happen roughly every decade. If the mayans fail us, well, I'm sure we can dig up other some other old calendars that predict the end in 2020 or another symmetric looking year. 8-)

It's pretty hard to believe that anyone out there, in any age, could definitively say that on such and such a date, the world is going to end. I mean, it's just not possible. I believe in all sorts of strange shit, but this is even beyond me. The world is not going to end in 2012 unless we blow each other up, which, even then, would mean the WORLD doesn't end, just the world as we know it ends, and probably most of the human population with it.

BUT....having said that, it's an AWESOME excuse to party like there is no tomorrow for the next couple of years!!!!!!!!

I think there will be an end of days for humans once we suffocate ourselves to death and choke on our own pollution.

Earth will still keep on kickin' though.

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

The end of life on Earth will be as our Sun begins to die. As it runs out of fuel and begins swell in size, consuming the inner terrestrial planets, its heat will scorch the Eath, ending all life here.
But it ain't gonna happen in 2 years. We still have a couple of billion years to fuck this place up...
    ...
Unless an asteroid of significant mass slams into the surface of the Earth before then...
or one of the mega volcanoes erupts and a global ash cloud causes temperatures to drop. Either event will cause catasthropic extinction... but, life, of some sort, will endure.
The death of our Sun.. no.. that's the end of Earth.

    2012

    I am looking forward to
    Yellowstone lodge
    Winding up on the moon
    Tsunamis flooding corn fields
An entire planet turned inside out
Or at least a cult celebrating
    Crystal therapy Tuesdays
    Flying saucers in mossy skies
    Bigfoot revealed
    As Elvis unshaven
    And the four syrups
    Of the apocalypse
    Slowly
    Dripping over us

    It will only happen
    Once
    So we might as well
    Fertilize the hysteria
    And hope
    Come January
    We are not overly
    Disappointed
    When we wake up
    Throw on our costumes
    And shuffle off to work
    Like nothing happened

Has anyone ever considered the Mayans writing the calendar finally got all the way to the year 2012 and said, "Fuck it, that's good for now. My wrist is killing me. Someone else can finish this bullshit calendar writing in a few hundred years".

They had multiple calendars including a 365 day calendar for farming and tax purposes.. the 2012 ending calendar was based on intution, conciousness, etc. It wasn't based on the revolution and rotation of celestial objects like our gregorian calendar.

Except, that calendar was based on the number 13 with in 13 with in 13 and so on.. as it progressed the numbers got infinitily compressed until it reached a point it could not go any further. There's some interesting reading on the subject. They didn't get bored and just say "fuck it". ;)

It's based on the collective consciousness of the universe.

Everything that has a beginning has an end...

The world is going to end devoured by the sun when our sun becomes a red giant and starts to grow, but don't worry that would be in billions of years.

People should spend less time worrying about when everyone will die and more that they themselves could get hit by a car tomorrow and it wouldn't matter anyways.

Or just not worry about it all all, because like you said, everything has an ending.
