Question about Columbus show "Alive" lyrics

First of all, please don't flame me or proclaim my ignorance since although I've been a PJ fan since Ten came out, I've only made it to 2 shows and only just recently discovered this wonderful community.

So now that my disclaimer is out of the way, I'm just curious about something that those of you who have been to tons of shows and/or listened to tons of bootlegs might be able to help me with. While at the show and now listening to the Columbus show bootleg, I noticed that Eddie changed the word "daddy" in Alive to "father'. However, it appears that he said "daddy" on the Kansas City bootleg. Anyone else notice this? Is this something he does often? Is there any particular meaning behind the change?

I was just wondering...

I noticed he did that at the Cleveland show, too. Btw, you're not alone--I've been a fan since Ten also and have only been to 1 show (Cleveland last month), and just discovered the site this year!

Ed sometimes just sings different words. They play alot of different songs on tour and even with the prompt in front of him it's hard to get them all like they were original. He butchered Amongst The Waves in Buffalo. He started over and still skipped half the first verse. Band was amazing as they jumped right to chorus. That was an amazing recovery by them. I have alot of respect for Ed and the boys for playing so many different sets.

I believe in an interview Ed said he's changes songs with "daddy" to "father" because now he has children who refer to him a "daddy" and doesn't want his "daddy" name to get confused with this music references to "daddy". I believe a similar thing to "mother" too.

It's only been fairly recently since he's had kids too.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Thanks everyone! It just sounded strange and deliberate to me and I was wondering if there was any backstory to it.

And straitline - that's awesome that you finally got to go to a show! And that your first was during such a great tour! Unfortunately, my first show was during the 2003 Riot Act tour. Don't get me wrong, they were fabulous, but the crowd at that show seemed kind of dead and Riot Act is my least favorite of their albums...

That definitely makes sense why he would change it then.

catsheller--- We didn't have great seats, by any means, (I wasn't even a member on here when they went on sale) but I was just so happy to witness the greatest rock band EVER playing LIVE!! It was like no other concert I've ever been to. I can't wait til they come back this way again!!! :D And hopefully I will be able to get a little closer next time!

  • Where were you sitting? Cleveland was my first and only show as well. I was in the upper deck, stage right, just before it starts curving around behind the basket.

  • In my opinion, father is a much less personal and intimate term than daddy. Maybe that is why he changed it up?

That could have something to do with it now, but Ed has been randomly singing father/mother instead of daddy/mommy since the 90s. He also does this when singing Jeremy.

I love to listen to all the different boots and hear him mess up the lyrics or change the words. It shows his human side and that he is just having fun with it. Especially when he will change it to fit the particular venue or town.

We were in section C127---middle deck on the left side----far far away!! Still an awesome show even if we weren't close.

I absolutely love when he messed up Fatal in Buffalo last month---especially when he stops and admits that he "fucked it up"!!! And then asks for another bottle of wine! Love it!! :D
