Someone said the term is polarizing. That is 100% true. So in the interest of not upsetting what might be half of the people interested in this awesome idea, wouldn't it be prudent to just go with something else?
By pushing this term, you are basically telling those people who have made it clear that the term is unliked, that you don't care about the way they feel about it.
I think people who actually get upset over the use of the term need to have their head examined. If you don't like it, find it childish, whatever... fine, your opinion. But to actually get upset over it?
It's a fucking band people. You're a group of fans. There are bigger problems in life.
Talk about childish.<a href="http://www.facebook.com/camragirl" target="_TOP" title="Colleen Halsdorff Palacios"><img src="http://badge.facebook.com/badge/601453432.7240.30463077.png" width="338" height="84" style="border: 0px;" /></a><!-- Facebook Badge END -->0 -
The Pearl Jam fan base being called jamily is funny at best because 80 percent of us don't like each other and 19 percent of the other 20 wouldn't like each other if you didn't pretend because you are trying to keep ticket options available if needed.
1 percent actually like each other and actually would get along outside a pre-party or a show.0 -

I refer to "my Jamily" as the other Pearl Jam fans that I AM close with. There are a couple dozen that we hang out with all the time outside of shows & pre-parties, & I consider them good friends. Some of them were our friends before we started seeing PJ. We keep in contact regularly with the ones who don't live nearby (& we don't use them for tickets). Over the years that group of ppl grows, but it's not an automatic invite into it just because ur a fan. Any schmuck can like PJ, but u have to have much more of a connection with me than that for me to call u part of my Jamily. To us, "Jamily" carries more distinction than "PJ fan," cause every person's Jamily is different, like a fingerprint. It's grown out of each fan's unique combination of experiences enjoying Pearl Jam with great friends. U don't hafta agree with me, but I like the word, & that's my personal definition for it.
So basically, I agree with part of what you're saying, because I def wouldn't call the whole PJ fan base "my Jamily," no more than I would call all middle-class caucasian 20-something-yr-old females "my family." Plus, the word gets thrown around too loosely, so it loses its meaning. Like saying, "I love u!" to everyone u see & giving them a big fake hug... how can u tell who those ppl really LOVE?
All verbage aside, I support the yearbook, whatever it's called. Great idea<a href="http://www.facebook.com/camragirl" target="_TOP" title="Colleen Halsdorff Palacios"><img src="http://badge.facebook.com/badge/601453432.7240.30463077.png" width="338" height="84" style="border: 0px;" /></a><!-- Facebook Badge END -->0 -

Don't take a simple term some people choose to use in a fun way so seriously.
No matter what its called, its a great idea and it would be wonderful if everyone can get behind the idea and not get into the semantics of one or two words/phrases - at the end of the day we are all fans whether you choose to phrase it as 'jamily' 'pearl fam' or 'community of fans' - they all mean the same thing!
Oh - I've signed up too for any and all photographic responsibilities! :P
Sure, but if you had a close group and 3-5 out of ten of them were upset by a certain term, why push that term.

By pushing this term, you are basically telling those people who have made it clear that the term is unliked, that you don't care about the way they feel about it.
It is a simple fix to change the name, but by ignoring 30%-50% of the group it doesn't make me feel like being part of that project/group.
Awesome idea. Laura is awesome, it will be awesome, but with that term attached I'm put off, and obviously many are.
My apologies, I'm not sure that's what I meant. I just felt it was a bit harsh to say that they were disappointed in Laura for perpetuating a term. It was more a rally call for the idea! I wasn't saying in any way the term 'Jamily' should be used or that it shouldn't be used (for this project or anything else) - rather the focus should be on the idea and execution itself. If anything I was trying to say we should all be involved and forget about using certain phrases and getting fixated on them as they all mean the same thing - as Laura said it was only used "for lack of a better term".
Apologies again if I offended anyone by my post, that was most definitley not my intention!
Thanks T, I totally understand your point & appreciate the defense!
edwho...bummer that you're saddened to see me perpetuate the term Jamily. "Jamily" really doesn't bother me and I don't feel threatened/labeled by it, either good or bad. To me it's a term that immediately got the point across as to what we're doing and who/what it's about. I understand that a lot of people actually are offended by it, thus I changed the title of the thread to remove the word Jamily. I'm not going through the effort of changing the graphic cuz I'm lazy like that. The name is only one aspect of this topic.
The name, just like the "Most Likely to..." categories, the cover and more will all be up for vote by the fan populace if they choose to voteIt's as easy as that. Don't like the name Jamily? Vote for something else/vice versa.
Glad to see people getting passionate about the project already0 -
Updated!!Foxy Mop wrote:The Wishlist Foundation 2011 20th Anniversary Pearl Jam "Jamily" (for lack of better term) Yearbook is a physical memento and tribute to Pearl Jam fans, the music, the tour memories and Pearl Jam history of the past 20 years.
This will be an actual commemorative yearbook like you received in high school. The goal is to create the yearbook prior to, and have it ready for pick up, at the 20th Anniversary Convergence (details soon!) so you can have everyone sign it right there!
=VOTING=
How do we do the nomination process? How do we vote? Who knows a good voting system online? Timeframes?
=DONATION PAYMENT=
PayPal will most likely be our primary source of donation acceptance. The Yearbook will most likely be a flat donation amount, plus any extras (dedication pages, extra photo perks, etc.), plus any shipping
=DELIVERY & SHIPPING=
The main delivery method we hope to use is the 20th Anniversary Convergence of which details will be out soon. This way we can have people signing books, etc. Obviously we will also deliver the books both domestically & internationally. Once we get dimensions & weight we can have someone research the costs.

All due respect Foxy Mop for the good you do with your foundation and bringing fans together, but that term just doesn’t fit. To see you spotlight it gives it acceptance and that scares me. I dismissed the Entertainment Weekly usage factoring in sensationalism and ignorance. But when someone with your credibility and influence accepts it, it may end up sticking. You see I canceled my Tiger Beat subscription decades ago. Bobby Sherman is so yesterday. Also, that term brings back awful memories of hundreds of teen age girls with pleading desperate faces screaming EDDIE, EDDIE throughout concerts.

You people are ridiculous.
I can't believe you're getting on this woman's case. She's trying to do something fun.
So much crying goes on around here, but at least it's over tickets or seats or something tangible. This really is a new low. Well done.<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmgphotos/sets/72157600802942672/">My Pearl Jam Photos</a>

I personally hate the term "Jamily". But, when it was used in EW, it became "learned behavior". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundredth_monkey_effect
There really is no going back. I will never use the term, but if other people use, oh well.
Of course the other term that we used to use, "Tourkids", no longer seems appropriate either.0 -

No worries! I'm not pissed or offended or anythingThat's my point... I'm all about acceptance. I accept that you and others don't like the term Jamily (which I mentioned in the first post "for lack of better term") and have since removed it from the post title.. just as I accept that some people don't mind it at all. To me, it's just a term, a word. It doesn't define me, or bother me.
In the long run, the title of the Yearbook will be voted on by all of us fans and I hope you and everyone who hates it, votes against it. Those who want it, vote for it. And if you have other ideas for a title, nominate them to be voted on too! All I care is that you vote and participate in the creation process and we get a good consensus of what the majority of the fans want.
Unfortunately there will always be people who aren't happy/satisfied with the results. But we, as always, will do our best to try to accommodate and make as many people as we can happy
So.... be passionate and participate!0
