granted, he IS a great guitarist but i've just never seen how he got the nickname 'god'. i liked his work with the yardbirds, john mayall, cream and some of his solo stuff but 'god'?
but then i've known people that thought the same of hendrix saying he only played basic blues riffs and noel gallagher is far better

It was during his Yardbird days that he got the nickname "God". He wrote it in his book and I forgot what he said about it.
Also, I'm a big Clapton fan.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

yeah, he does have a nice, smooth flow with his playing and i'm not saying he's a talentless hack, i think he's great, i just don't know that i'd think of him as 'god' but if it was from his yardbird days i think that was the early or mid 60's, right? so i guess i could see it back at that point when there wasn't a hendrix or page or gilmour
i suppose i could've titled the thread a little better, looking at it now sounds like i think he sucksdon't compete; coexist

i think his straight up blues songs are some of the best ever written. He was given the status before jimi came along (from stories i've read he actually cried after he saw hendrix for the first time cause he thought nobody would want to see him play over hendrix anyday.) But as far as the greats of blues guitar go, i think clapton is god. I've seen him twice in the past 5 years, crossroads fest in particular and the caliber of his playing is a lot better than i ever would've thought. On a stage full of blues guitar heros he was easily the best in my mind. I think SRV and hendrix are amazing as well but clapton is right along next to them and sadly is the only one left standing.0

and at that point did you punch said person in the throat?
as for eric, you have to put into perspective of the 60's...most people really hadn't heard the guitar played like that...the beatles, stones had a heavy blues influence but eric really brought the blues guitar mainstream
and it was the 60's so there was a lot of drugs taken0 -
I really don't get the hype with a lot of artists from his era. I've tried to like people like Clapton, Hendrix, Deep Purple, etc, but it doesn't do anything for me.Thanks EPOTTSIII!

Well a lot of people wouldn't be playing now if it wasn't for Clapton, you have to see the things on perspective, is like saying that the wheel is a dumb invention while you're watching the challenger being launched"The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it"

He's been through a lot in his life but even as a young man he drew on an old soul feel in his work. I've enjoyed seeing him perform live over the years a few times and hope for more

i've never been much of a clapton fan.
i like a few songs, that's about it.
mostly he wears me out.
example:
eric clapton's song "cocaine" get tons of air play on the radio.
black sabbath's "snow blind" is never ever played on the radio and if it is, a small section of hell froze over.
anyway,,, that reason is not why i dislike clapton's tunes.

He might be a good guitar player, but I can't think of one song he's written in 30 years that is worth listening to outside of an elevator.0

Listen to his 60's stuff. Cream was insanely revolutionary. Here's audio from their Grande Ballroom gig in October 1967.

Maybe you don't get it b/c you think Noel Gallagher is better than him.0

Um. He's very plainly not saying that he thinks Noel Gallagher is better than Clapton. Agree 100%. I have never been a Clapton fan. Sure, he can play guitar alright, but so can a lot of old dudes in run-down bars in Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, etc. It's his songwriting that keeps me away from him. It is sooo boring. People say he has soul or plays the blues, but I do not feel that at all when I hear him play. I would say the opposite, I feel no soul, I feel no pain or passion. I don't feel it at all.
Some people may be bothered by this, but I would put him in the same class as John Mayer. Guys who were blessed with an azmaing talent in using their hands to fly across a fret board majestically, but miss out on the most important part of making good music, which is playing from the heart.words seem so out of place.
