Record Song Vs. Live Song
I have to admit if PJ puts another album out soon I will be totally unprepared. It takes me quite a while to listen to a new PJ release to fully understand the depth and breadth of what the band is saying or trying to do.
However, have you ever listened to a song from an album and thought that was okay until you hear it live.
Marker in the Sand was one of those songs.
Was not a big fan until I heard it live and it rocked!!!!!

You Are - I didn't exactly understand it at first listen...but the groove and pattern that Stone plays through the drum machine that Matt programmed = pure genius and amazing to hear live.9/29/96, 8/29/98, 9/8,11/98, 7/28/99, 8/23,24,25/00, 10/13/00, 4/15/03, 4/30/03, 7/8,9,12,14/03, 10/1/04, 9/30/05, 10/1/05, 5/4,5,13,27,28/06, 6/1,3/06, 6/19,20,22,24,25,27/08, 7/1/08, 8/4,5,7,16/08, 8/21/09, 10/27,28,30,31/09, 5/15,17,18,20,21/10, 9/2/12, 10/18,19,21,22,25/130

Honestly wasn't a huge fan of most of Backspacer until hearing it live. Got 8 of the 11 songs in Hartford alone and it definitely helped my perception. I loved Got Some, Unthought Known, and Gonna See My Friend and really liked Just Breathe and The End from the beginning, but the rest just seemed....meh, you know? But hearing Johnny Guitar, Amongst the Waves, even Speed of Sound, gave me a much better appreciation. The one that definitely pulled me to the other side was FORCE OF NATURE. Heard it in Boston and almost instantly fell in love with it for the first time.
Conversely, even though I really do love Yellow Ledbetter live for the changing lyrics and Mike's different twists and the quintessential 'closing time' feeling - I think the studio version is one of the most beautiful and perfect pieces of music I've ever heard."Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." - Thoreau

"Long Road"!!!
The atmosphere and slow build is stunning live (helps that it's a show opener) -- I've always thought the studio version was a muted, under-developed version of what it has become live."I know I was born and I know that I'll die...the in between is mine"0 -
For someone who colllects and listen to so many boots I'm actually a massive fan of the recorded work and really miss certain elements of the recorded versions live. Putting on the headphones and properly hearing Brendan O Brien's keys in the background or all the individual guitar parts that are sometimes lost on stage fills me with the same warmth I got on the first listen. The albums are works of art and I always listen to them on headphones and always right through too. You can't beat uninterrupted listening to my top 5, Vitalogy, No Code, Ten, Riot Act and Binaural. Live songs are great and I love listening to them but it's a completely different experience. It's all good!

Was thinking on this today actually - heading to work in a different location this morning, and put on Binaural after not listening to the studio recording for a looong time, and was reminded of how great it sounds. I usually think all Pearl Jam's work sounds better live, but I was feeling Binaural this morning definitely.
I liked Severed Hand on Avocado, but it really comes to life when you hear them play it live. Part of the reason for some songs is because of all the little embellishments and additions that the songs take on as the band gets comfortable playing them live- tiny little things - Corduroy now usually has the part of 'can't buy what I want because its peace', Severed Hand's introduction live is at least twice as long, things like that, Parting Ways, the long notes that Ed holds.R.i.p. ashamed to say it took inside job live to appreciate it... esp. being right up in front of Mike..
ahhh beautiful songwah0 -
yeah, but sung without any care or emotion. This song is sung to "automatic" and lifeless by Ed nowadays. It makes the audience come alive no doubt, but on bootlegs you can hear how dead and fastforward-played it is.Corduroy now usually has the part of 'can't buy what I want because its peace',
Just listened to Berlin 2009 and I almost laughed when Corudory came on. Sounds sort of lame. But the sudio versiion is one hell of a song."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0 -

The rockin jammy stuff is better live, the rest is better studio.0

I love Push Me, Pull Me, and as excited as I was to hear it in Philly, in my opinion it is much, much better on the album.
The Fixer is much better live than on the album.
I agree with the comments about You Are and Long Road. I think the song that really grabbed me by the neck and gave me a good shaking when I heard it live was Immortality.
