Just got my tix for MSG through a broker .....yikes they were pricey but anyhoo,,,,Im there for the 21st......

it is people like you who keep those bastards in business

No it's Ticketmaster, EBAY/craigslist and states that have no anti-scalping laws that keep those bastards in business.
Ticketmaster because anyone witrh a ticketmaster machine can rattle off lots of great tickets for themselves or friends, Ebay and craigslist that provides the medium and allows scalping and states who can easily crack down on it with laws but don't.

Every time you pay a premium for tickets through a broker, ebay, or wherever, you are telling the band that they are undercharging for tickets.

That isn't fair; higher ticket prices wouldn't discourage/interrupt the ticket aftermarket one bit. Buying them through outlets like craigslist or eBay is usually done out of necessity caused by a lack of access. The greed on that side of things is what hopefully leaves them without making a sale often enough to keep prices from skyrocketing even higher.

I think it's also telling the band "you're not playing enough #%@$ing dates / cities!!" :P

C'mon you geezers, get to work! yeah you wanna stay home with the wife and kiddies, blah blah blah. How ya gonna put those kids through college or bail them outta jail when they're teens or pay for their ritalin in grade school if you don't get your butts out on tour and make some bank?!?! ;)

(for the record, I'm 8 years older than Ed so the above was meant as a joke, kinda)

I don't agree that higher ticket prices wouldn't effect the ticket aftermarket. Whether Pearl Jam charges $5.00 a ticket or $500 a ticket, eventually the true market value of the ticket would show up. If PJ charges too little, the brokers sell at a premium to the market value. Otherwise, if they charge too much, the show doesn't sell out and tickets will either be discounted or given away bringing the average price paid per ticket to around the true market value.

If you think scalper prices are too high, then don't pay more than you think is fair. Once you pay the higher price, you are explicitly stating, putting your money where your mouth isn't, that that "rip-off" price is actually the right price.

If people are willing to pay $X dollars for a ticket, then that price is actually the true market value of the ticket. You could argue that ticket brokers buy up so many tickets to create an artificially high demand vs. the supply to warrant a higher price than face value. But even if that's true, the buyer is still in complete control. I have a problem with the word "necessity" - you may "need" to buy the ticket in the aftermarket because a show is sold out, but you don't "need" to pay extra for it, you don't "need" to buy the ticket at all.
  • I really do not think anyone want's to pay over face value, but from my brief 10c presale experience, I not sure of the value of presale program as tickets are gone very quickly and even if you get tickets the prospect of not knowing where your seats are is not really a great value and it seems as if a lot of memebers(longtime members) get crappy seats anyway from a lot of the comments I have seen. It dose seem like more dates would help lower the stubhub, ebay, ect. ticket price, but that is out of our hands, and I have alwaays thought PJ tried to play as many dates as any other Big time band. I also think it is a product of technology and the internet, I have notice that over last 10 years as internet ticket access has expanded reasonably priced tickets have been harder to find.Wish there was an easy answer, but I think we are stuck with what it is.

I guess my rationale here is that most fans (myself included) if given only two options (overpay or not go) are going to opt for overpaying. When those are your only options the original price or worth/value of the ticket is a foregone conclusion.

I agree that the limited amount of shows Pearl Jam has played lately, and the limited availability of the tickets for the shows they do play (whether due to legal/illegal ticket broker activities or not) contributes to the higher prices people are paying for tickets. Agreed. My original point was that getting angry at Ticketmaster, stubhub, or ebay for high prices is a little misdirected.

I am lucky enough to have been able to get tickets through the public sale for MSG II after being shut out of the two presales. I think this is my fourth show (first one was Randalls Island) and have been lucky enough to see some classics (Jones Beach, Philly III), so my expectations are very high and I think I paid a better than fair price in today's market.

Good point.I have been watching that as well.I think it will be a night 2 in Boston. But,as of yesterday, night 1 wasnt sold out.Neither is Hartford.Im sure both dates in those 2 great cities will sell out.I have been lucky to see U2 in Hartford (Civic Center,1985 and 1987) and in Boston (Old Garden,Patty's Day 03.17.92)Maybe it will be a 3rd show at MSG, since the tix sold out very, very fast for the 2 nights. They did this before. The first 2 shows in Philly sold out very fast (10.28 and 30.09),so they added 2 more.We shall see. 8-)

You just have to only buy tickets from people who charge face or less. If people wait until the show, then all the assholes selling tickets at higher than face value will get shut out and have to lower their prices. But everyone needs to be on board and not pay more than face value.
