    I read this article about eddie and pearl jam MANY years ago...probably something like 15 years ago and I THINK I read that Black was never about a girlfriend but a close friend who died. I recall something about how he was walking through a park or something and he ran into some kids who were singing something happily and it really hit him hard...hence the lyrics about the kids. BUT keep in mind this was a long time ago and I may be totally confabulating the memory.
