I don't know what the exact definition of "JB did it" would be, but in The Netherlands (and probably several or most West-European countries) this song has had most impact since the early 1990s. I hear it everywhere (not saying all the time): when I turn on the TV, a colleague plays the radio or when I walk to the canteen at work.

I loved the song when I saw the making of Backspacer videoclip, and this is already a classic song.

Discounting Last Kiss, it's Pearl Jam's biggest second single since the early 90's, no question.

Safe to say, this album would have moved atleast 100k more in the US at this point and time with a wider distribution other than Target...but there are other intangibles the band benefits from distributing the album solely through ITunes/Target.

I really, really want ATW to be the third single. I'm hoping that the Unthought Known rumors as a third single are false...it's a solid tune as well, just no way it does as well as ATW would.

Amongst The Waves would have been a great third single and huge hit if it was recorded with "old" Eddie and with that voice that People remembers from Alive, Even Flow and Jeremy. If it has that Ten-era anthemtic quality and strong vocals it would have knocked down the competition.

But ATW has too weak vocals, it's not anthemtic enoiugh in the chorus and lacks any punch that the early stuff had. So, even though I think it's a nice song because I love PJ and love Eddie it would not appeal to a general audience. It's too much of a struggle vocal-vise and doesn't have that punch in the chorus.

If old Eddie would sing it or if Chris Martin (if that is his name) would have sung on it arranged as a Coldplay-song it would have been a hit. (this is not me badmouthing PJ and praising Coldplay... I just think that the vocals on the track and how it sounds won't have people turing the head when it is played on the radio)

I don't know if this song has peaked... although it's dropping in most charts (rock, alternative), it's gaining in adult pop, and rebounded in top 100. That may mean it's beginning to crossover, although losing some ground on typically PJ-friendly stations. It's interesting. SNL can only help, but may be a bit late. I think by April, a new single will be out. But, I'm not sure Just Breathe is done quite yet.

Keeps moving up in adult contemporary... up to 21.... can we say it's officially crossed-over?

I hear that song everywhere. I have a 15 minute commute to work and am not in my car that often, but the song is always on Sirius. My player notifies me whenever PJ is on and that song sometimes plays simultaneously on two channels. I even have heard it shopping at Lowe's hardware store.

It crossed over a while ago. Eight weeks on the Hot 100. Six weeks and counting at #1 at Triple A.

I don't know but this is from another user from new thread.
Haven't been checking the charts lately, but as of right now, "Just Breathe" is:

    - #33 overall on iTunes top 100 songs
    - #3 overall on iTunes top 100 rock songs

    And Backspacer is:

    - #7 overall on iTunes top 100 albums
    - #2 overall on iTunes top 100 rock albums

    Link: http://www.windpowersports.com/music/top-songs.php (chart updates daily)

It's been a while since people have bought more Pearl Jam than Daughtry, John Mayer, Black Eyed Peas, etc. Has Just Breathe really been this popular, or is this the SNL effect?

I don't really listen to the radio at school (no car), but when I was home for Christmas break I listened to it in my car and the radio was on all day when I was at work, and I ALWAYS heard Just Breathe. More than The Fixer as a matter of fact.

Ask and you shall receive! I will officially change the title of this thread. Hey, I'll admit I was wrong. I predicted that this song had peaked months ago. I thought it would've been long gone by the time St. Patrick's Day rolled around. Same with Backspacer... I thought that would be out of the Billboard 200 by now. So, I will change the name of the thread and acknowledge that I was wrong... BUT...

I was right with a couple of predictions (at least so far)... the song hasn't become a humongous hit to the level of past singles like Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" or Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". Those were HUGE singles that helped their albums get over platinum status. Yes, it's a successful single. Yes, it's succeeded in keeping Backspacer in the charts. Yes, it's helped the album reach over 500,000. Yes, you deserve to have the thread title changed.

By the way, not a bad second wave of promotion for the single and the album, eh? The SNL appearance obviously breathed new life into the song and the album. Maybe the tour news and a possible Letterman appearance will help a little too? Add the Austin City Limits TV appearance and I think Pearl Jam has pulled off a nice, lasting marketing campaign.
