I try to quickly get away when people try to engage me in conversations that are really just complaint sessions, gossip sessions, or fear-spreading sessions. At those times I quickly dis-engage and practically run or hang up the phone.

When I was in third grade or so we were on Cape Cod and hurricane bob took the power out for 3+ days, that's my longest without power don't think I wold manage as well now.
