I can hear that...although the Clash "I Fought the Law" is a cover - the original was done by the Bobby Fuller Four sometime in the late 50's/early 60's...

Anyway, I LOVE Santa God! I think most kids believe in god on some level and by the time you figure out that Santa isn't real, you also start questioning the believability of god. But you know what - It's a cute, catchy Christmas ditty and I don't wanna over-analyze it - I wanna enjoy it!

  • sounds like REM circa 1984!, its ok, its fun, aslong as it doesn't get played at my pj next gig instead of something i really want to hear like ed did with 'no more' at wembley.

jingle bells brought a smile to my face....good effort mike

    leeds 26/08/06....electric
    paris 11/09/06.....crushed...but estatic
    wembley 18/06/07.....oh yes

'listen...you can hear the sustain...you just hold that note and you can go get a bite whilst its still going'

  • Not really a fan... rough B-side at best.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

When Santa was... Santa Claus was...
    When Santa Claus was God

Now we're grown and so complex,
In a world that can't relax,
Even though he was a lie,
    We all were satisfied,

    When Santa Claus was God,
    When Santa Claus was God,
When Santa was... When Santa Claus was...
    When Santa Claus was God

How I learned from right and wrong,
Had to be good for Santa Claus,
    He made me, stop misbehaving,

And once a year if I did my job,
I'd be given my favorite toys,
    So simple, the principles,

When Santa was... When Santa Claus was...
    Santa Claus was God

I haven't even heard the song yet, but from these lyrics, I think it's a pretty interesting take on what Christmas meant to alot of us, as opposed to what it should have been about. It's pretty scary what the holiday is supposed to be about, and what we've turned it into, and I'm not even talking about commercialization. How and when did a celebration of Christ's birth become about Santa Claus, flying reindeer, etc.? Don't get me wrong, I love all that stuff, it's just thought provoking.

  • I like it. It's very clever.

Great punk vibe. I wish Ed would do a few more songs like this.
Its got a great garage band feel to it that I'd put pretty high on my list of the Xmas singles.

But then I'd take Brain of J and Lukin over Given to Fly and Inside Job.

i'm a fan of the x-mas single this year.

'santa god' has some thought behind it and so does 'jingle bells'.
it doesn't seem to me they just threw some shit against a wall and went with what stuck.

i appreciate the '07 x-mas single. if you're looking for a top 10 PJ song on the x-mas single, then you aren't looking in the right place.

just grove with it for what it is...fun.

I love everything about this year's single---the packaging, the new song, Mike's version of a holiday (kids) classic. I think the boys having little ones played into this year's theme. They did a great job in MHO!! :) Can't wait to hear it next year during the season.
