I can NEVER get any of my friends to come around to Pearl Jam. . . I think they derive more pleasure from irritating me than anything else because of it.
We get into discussions all the time and most of my argument consists of PJ's longevity, great musical craftsmanship, lyrical content, and pure talent. After I plead my case I usually get the profound comeback of "Yeah, but they suuuuuck! Eddie Cheddar!!!". . "Toe Jam!!". . . "They are no where near as talented as Metallica!"

Idiots. . . I guess when you're discriminating taste in music consists of Mudvayne, Static-X, and the oh so mighty Metallica I should only expect so much out of you.

open your ears and your brains. . . if Pearl Jam is so goddamn weak, why is it that they have outlasted and outsold most of the tripe you clowns listen to?!

    Holy shit, where's the Tylenol?!

I had this conversation with my husband, it went sort of like this.
Him: I like fun music, Pearl Jam is all depressing stuff
Me:Well some is but what about Dirty Frank?
Him: I don't know, have I heard it? What is it about?
Me:Well, a cannibalistic serial killer bus driver, but it's a fun song. :D
Him: (he just looked at me like I was crazy and said nothing)

I don't know if I convinced him or not.
    that's funny. :D

i gave up on trying to explain it years ago. the more i talk, the crazier i look. now i try to keep my pj gushing to pj friends (as much as possible).

"what are you going to california for?"
"oh, you know, just to visit a friend, take a mini-vacation"

    it's easier this way. :)

any time I put in for leave at work, my boss says, where's Pearl Jam playing now

    it's kind of my "thing"

that's the same thing my boss would ask in 2006.

they know i'm nuts. and it did eventually come out that i was seeing pj. but sometimes it's easier to not get into it...over and over again.

IT SUCKS. i'm 16 and in high school, and most of my friends do like what they know but think i am INSANE for thinking they are the best band ever and loving them the way i do. they just know even flow, daughter, betterman, and black .. that stuff .. i HAAATE THAT!! its all the radio plays, and honestly those songs do not define pj. if my friends actually took the time to hear stuff from yield, no code, binaural, and stuff like that then they would realize they are a much deeper and more creative band. they look at them as just another rock band. little do they know ... it sucks trying to explain. however i have a bunch comming with me to the hartford show, so i'm hoping that will change them!

Good luck (I mean that). I surprised they know Black. That doesn't really get a lot of airplay.

If somebody donesn't like the band, it's not because they don't "get it," it's simply due to different music tastes.

I've tried to turn a few people onto Pearl Jam by giving them some songs to listen, if they don't like them then that's cool and I don't persist. Nothing worse than a pushy fan who thinks that everyone should listen to their favourite band, and everyone who doesn't can not "see the light."

I tried to get my ex-girlfriend into PJ for 4 years. She never got into them because she thought Ed's voice was annoying. But of course, lo and behold, after we split she tells me "I like that No More War song, I think I'm starting to like'em" FUCK....... ME!!!!
  • It's so hard.... I've tried to explain many people but they don't understand me and I accept it but the only thing that I expect from them is to respect my tastes (=respect pearl jam).
I remember months ago I stopped to speak with a guy cause everytime we spoke of pearl jam he laugthed in my face and told me unplasants things of them, since that day he die for me..

I never try to get anyone to like PJ. But sometimes my husband just keeps on me about how depressing they are so I was trying to explain that they aren't all depressing. I just thought it was kind of funny that I picked Dirty Frank as a fun song :D

I don't think I convinced him that it is.

I completely agree that everyone has different tastes. My cousins son asked me one day why do you like Pearl Jam so much(the kid is 6!) before I could answer he said I like Trent Reznor. So I replied why do you like Trent Reznor so much??????

I just wish my husband could get into PJ with me. I am almost embarrassed to post that he listens to 80s stuff. He thinks Night Ranger are one of the best bands ever :( I have to live with this :(

See I really try to remember this when I start in one someone who says something ignorant about PJ.

But here's my issue. If you're into quality music of any kind (and by that I mean, generally, written and performed by the individual/group and containing creativity/talent/etc etc), then you should at least give them a shot. I don't try to convince teeny boppers or rap fans, but I have a real problem with people who listen to good classic/contemporary rock not giving PJ a listen. They stick to what they remember from the early 90's (accurate or not) and then they shut down. Pearl Jam, at the very least, is a respectable rock band. If it's not your style, fine. But if you haven't heard their catalog, and you're going to try to tell me how awful they are, you've probably got an ear full coming.

Explaining PJ has never worked for me. Giving people my CDs and telling them to listen to them and look up the lyrics works all the time however.
