Sounds and works amazing. I just get it greased and serviced every one in a while and it will last another 40 years.
These like anything else can be had in a wide variety of price ranges. Just need to research and be a bit more careful when buying something of this age but it's well worth the effort.

Rega is great quality and relatively affordable, i think you can get one for around $400! I actually have a Goldring GR 1.2 and it is amazing, pretty much a Rega P1 clone with a better cart.
I also have a Hitachi PS-38 which im in the process of fixing up, hopefully it will make some sweet music as well.
That's a horrible reccomendation. He's probably looking for something that won't destroy his records.
Rega was mentioned earlier and is another solid brand. Doing a little research can go a long way, but I think you'll find that, in the long run, almost anything with a USB out and a non-replaceable cartridge isn't worth the $$ you'll save. Quality and upgradeability means your turntable will last a long, long time, and you can always record your vinyl through your receiver (headphone or RCA out to 2.5mm jack on a computer).

especialy if your gonna play something like benny hall on it
depends what the rest of your system is like
no point on splashing out if your amps an speakers dont match
but no chance would i play something like itw or benny hall on any old crap

Decent Table...the Internal Pre-Amp is an interesting idea....Great Price!...Just make sure you get a nice Cartridge...these type of turntables (mine included) have heavier tonearms & can F-up a record pretty quick if you don't.
You're right, these turntables were built to last and are some of the best you an buy as long as you have a decent stylus as well.
I'd recommend to anyone who wants a record player to actually use and enjoy: don't buy one of those USB ones or any other junk. Save up your money and look on ebay. You can find a very solidly made turntable in the $250-$400 range. Trust me it will be well worth it.
Also make sure you have a solid Receiver(amp) and quality speakers. There is zero sense in getting a nice table if the speakers hooked up to them sound like hollow soup cans. Don't waste your time and money then.
If you wait it out, save and get nice equipment, you will reap the rewards of beautiful sounds from the vinyl for years to come.

I've always used Shures...resonably priced...hold up well...been using the Shure M97xE for awhile now...but there are many others out there. Remember, don't skimp out on the stylus/cartridges..thats what actually touches your records.
The cartridge that comes with that turntable doesn't seem too bad.
I'd recommend this cartridge. http://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Techn ... tegory=363
I had that one prior(my niece decided to slap the needle down on the platter and watch it spin round and round). This needle is great and is moderately priced in comparison to some of the other needles out there. Sounds very good.
