"Just Breathe" DID IT

It seems just as that song was released and as it has gained momentum Pearl Jam is totally gone.
Now they are doing Europe and it seems highly likely that they are touring NA, and I'm sure once those things start to happen then it will be like they never left.
It's just a part of me wishes they were doing the promotion circuit still. Getting the word out about Backspacer.
(and yes I realize they featured a song on a tv show recently).
I don't know I just don't feel the push for this album is close to what S/T was. And with Just Breathe doing so well I hope they don't miss an opportunity to reach out to more fans.
I wonder if the promotional aspect of Backspacer is more to do with circumstance than anything else. Seeing how it was released in the fall, everything they tend to do surrounding a new album had to be compacted to fit before the holiday season. They generally lay low for most of Dec.-Jan. Due to this self-imposed timeframe, they decided to divide a certain amount of exposure across a few continents.
The lack of visibility as Just Breathe climbs the charts right now might have to due with the band being hunkered down in the studio making new music (Yeh!). But like you stated, things will pick up as the year goes on and the touring resumes. Whether by design or not, this could work out to their benefit. For the self-titled, there was a huge push in the first month or so. Then, during the course of 2006, pearl jam underwent perhaps one of their largest-scale tours to date. And yet, promotionally speaking, by Aug '06 they were practically non-existent. Whereas 2010 could act as a second wind for Backspacer; a chance to, hopefully, gain momentum. I assume that is the big picture stuff you were referring to. For now, the video for Just Breathe is not doing a bad job as substitute.0 -

Yes, it is all digital and all relative. But what I'm saying is this:
The CD single has been replaced by the iTune download. For anyone that has Backspacer, it would make no sense to pay to download "Just Breathe". However, in 1998 most hardcore fans would go out and buy the "Wishlist" CD single even though they already owned Yield because it had a B-side.
You could argue that the same condition exists today for every band and it's a level playing field, but I don't think that's true. While PJ does not have a huge audience, they have a more hardcore fanbase then almost any other band. Back in the CD single days they'd get a HUGE boost comparitively on the Hot 100 due to physical sales. They still get it for the first single, like the Fixer, when the album is not yet available. But they definitely don't get it for the second or third singles. Sure, they'll get downloads from casual rock fans but they won't have 50,000 of us lunatics going out and buying a piece of music that they already own."Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"0 -

Exactly. One digital download equals one CD single sold-- and there is a much greater volume of digital downloads than sales of CD singles in the pre-download era. I doubt that "Wishlist" sold close to 20,000 singles in any week, even its debut week. ("Just Breathe" has been close to 20,000 downloads for several weeks in a row.)
"Wishlist" was the last second single from a Pearl Jam album to reach the Hot 100. It peaked at #47 in its second week on that chart. Believe it or not, sales had little impact on the song's run on the Hot 100 (other than the fact that you needed to have a commercially available single in order to be eligible to chart on the Hot 100).
The single debuted at #47 on the Singles Sales chart, but fell out after just three weeks. "Wishlist" remained on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for 15 weeks-- 7 of which were before the single was commercially released--peaking at #52 in its 10th week and spending 11 weeks between #52 and #59. On the strength of the steady airplay, the song remained on the Hot 100 for 20 weeks.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -

if they were to promote Just Breathe. Dancing with the Stars would be a good fit. But a lot of people won't like that. But Valentine's Day could help.I miss igotid880 -

Yeah... would be nice to see a Valentine's Day push. Seems like a well placed Letterman would be a good idea at some point. Obviously probably needs to be when they are already planning to be in NYC.
Also perhaps an interview might be nice. Talk some more about Backspacer and confirm a tour and the EP! :shock:0 -

Yeah I'm sure it is just a lull during the holidays. And if they are in fact touching up the leftovers from the backspacer sessions for an EP then Hell Yeah!
I'll take 4 months of silence for that!0 -

Billboard.com really needs to update their Pearl Jam pictures. Or is it still 1992?0

What is the Triple A chart? Is that adult rock? I've always seen this but do not know what it means."Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"0

yup. its a huge mystery to me. especially considering all their interviews last summer talking about wanting to expand their audience a bitwww.myspace.com0 -
"Just Breathe" will move up from #98 (19,920 downloads) to #91 (20,871 downloads) on Hot Digital Songs (up 5 percent). Last five weeks: 193-130-111-98-91. The song has been downloaded a total of 206,973 times.
Eddie Vedder's version of "My City In Ruins" leapfrogs "Just Breathe" and debuts on Hot Digital Songs at #60 with 29,575 downloads.
"Just Breathe" is still short of the Hot 100 Airplay top 75 (up from #152 to #139, including recurrents), but it gained another 600,000 audience impressions this week.
No word yet on the Hot 100.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0
