I realize we are talking big picture here in terms of promotion, but what I find a shame is the lack of presence from the band as Just Breathe takes off.
It seems just as that song was released and as it has gained momentum Pearl Jam is totally gone.
Now they are doing Europe and it seems highly likely that they are touring NA, and I'm sure once those things start to happen then it will be like they never left.
It's just a part of me wishes they were doing the promotion circuit still. Getting the word out about Backspacer.
(and yes I realize they featured a song on a tv show recently).
I don't know I just don't feel the push for this album is close to what S/T was. And with Just Breathe doing so well I hope they don't miss an opportunity to reach out to more fans.
I wonder if the promotional aspect of Backspacer is more to do with circumstance than anything else. Seeing how it was released in the fall, everything they tend to do surrounding a new album had to be compacted to fit before the holiday season. They generally lay low for most of Dec.-Jan. Due to this self-imposed timeframe, they decided to divide a certain amount of exposure across a few continents.
The lack of visibility as Just Breathe climbs the charts right now might have to due with the band being hunkered down in the studio making new music (Yeh!). But like you stated, things will pick up as the year goes on and the touring resumes. Whether by design or not, this could work out to their benefit. For the self-titled, there was a huge push in the first month or so. Then, during the course of 2006, pearl jam underwent perhaps one of their largest-scale tours to date. And yet, promotionally speaking, by Aug '06 they were practically non-existent. Whereas 2010 could act as a second wind for Backspacer; a chance to, hopefully, gain momentum. I assume that is the big picture stuff you were referring to. For now, the video for Just Breathe is not doing a bad job as substitute.
That makes no sense because it is all relative to today's format, which is digital.
Yes, it is all digital and all relative. But what I'm saying is this:
The CD single has been replaced by the iTune download. For anyone that has Backspacer, it would make no sense to pay to download "Just Breathe". However, in 1998 most hardcore fans would go out and buy the "Wishlist" CD single even though they already owned Yield because it had a B-side.
You could argue that the same condition exists today for every band and it's a level playing field, but I don't think that's true. While PJ does not have a huge audience, they have a more hardcore fanbase then almost any other band. Back in the CD single days they'd get a HUGE boost comparitively on the Hot 100 due to physical sales. They still get it for the first single, like the Fixer, when the album is not yet available. But they definitely don't get it for the second or third singles. Sure, they'll get downloads from casual rock fans but they won't have 50,000 of us lunatics going out and buying a piece of music that they already own.
"Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"
That makes no sense because it is all relative to today's format, which is digital.
Exactly. One digital download equals one CD single sold-- and there is a much greater volume of digital downloads than sales of CD singles in the pre-download era. I doubt that "Wishlist" sold close to 20,000 singles in any week, even its debut week. ("Just Breathe" has been close to 20,000 downloads for several weeks in a row.)
"Wishlist" was the last second single from a Pearl Jam album to reach the Hot 100. It peaked at #47 in its second week on that chart. Believe it or not, sales had little impact on the song's run on the Hot 100 (other than the fact that you needed to have a commercially available single in order to be eligible to chart on the Hot 100).
The single debuted at #47 on the Singles Sales chart, but fell out after just three weeks. "Wishlist" remained on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for 15 weeks-- 7 of which were before the single was commercially released--peaking at #52 in its 10th week and spending 11 weeks between #52 and #59. On the strength of the steady airplay, the song remained on the Hot 100 for 20 weeks.

if they were to promote Just Breathe. Dancing with the Stars would be a good fit. But a lot of people won't like that. But Valentine's Day could help.

Yeah... would be nice to see a Valentine's Day push. Seems like a well placed Letterman would be a good idea at some point. Obviously probably needs to be when they are already planning to be in NYC.
Also perhaps an interview might be nice. Talk some more about Backspacer and confirm a tour and the EP!

Yeah I'm sure it is just a lull during the holidays. And if they are in fact touching up the leftovers from the backspacer sessions for an EP then Hell Yeah!

yup. its a huge mystery to me. especially considering all their interviews last summer talking about wanting to expand their audience a bit
"Just Breathe" will move up from #98 (19,920 downloads) to #91 (20,871 downloads) on Hot Digital Songs (up 5 percent). Last five weeks: 193-130-111-98-91. The song has been downloaded a total of 206,973 times.
Eddie Vedder's version of "My City In Ruins" leapfrogs "Just Breathe" and debuts on Hot Digital Songs at #60 with 29,575 downloads.
"Just Breathe" is still short of the Hot 100 Airplay top 75 (up from #152 to #139, including recurrents), but it gained another 600,000 audience impressions this week.

I read they had a big commercial spot on the Grammys, so that is cool. Hopefully some of the 'dopes' that watch the Grammys will cross over.
I think we all know that the My City of Ruins cover, while very nice, will plummet very soon. Just Breathe, on the other hand, has staying power and is moving up the charts.
I think it's a shame the band isn't trying to capitalize on that movement, or at least promoting the song a bit more. Once people hear it, they tend to like it. I really think a good marketing campaign for this song could really push up sales for the single and the album. For instance, it would have been great if Target showcased "Just Breathe" a bit in it's more recent ad for Backspacer on the Grammys.
I still feel like Just Breathe will climb up a bit in February before peaking. If promotion doesn't occur... which it looks like it won't, the one other thing that could push this song to new heights is use in a TV show/movie or a cover on American Idol. Yep, I said it, and honestly, I would not be surprised in the least if the Idol thing happens. If there's a rock-type guy or gal... it would be a smart move.

I gotta say, I didn't think that Just Breathe would be a good single. But the very fact that the song has climbed to #7 on the alternative chart and this thread has grown to 26 pages shows that Just Breathe DID do it....whatever it is "it" is.

yea i was thinking of starting a new one with the title "Just Breathe' did it.
For those out there that predicted "Just Breathe" was going to be a great radio smash and create a little Backspacer sales spike, it doesn't look like it's going to turn out that way.
... And those are the words that I typed to begin this thread all those weeks ago. For those of you wanting to rename the thread, I might make a concession. How about: "JUST BREATHE" KIND OF DID IT?
I don't think that "Just Breathe" has become a "great radio smash". Yes, it's exceeded my prediction that it was going to be yet another second single that didn't go anywhere (like "Life Wasted" or "Light Years"). But it hasn't, as of yet, blown up to a full blown smash. It probably has kept Backspacer from completely falling off the charts, but I don't know if I'd define it as a "sales spike".
Anyways, I'll go ahead and rename the thread The song has not been a flop by any means, but it hasn't been a song that's hurdled Backspacer towards platinum status either.
Lets face it, nothing is going to hurl Backspacer to platinum status, those days are over for most rock bands. I think it was the perfect choice for the 2nd single but I can't understand why the hell they haven't gone on any shows to promote it. Have you seen some of the so-called guests on late night tv lately? My best friend works at a casino and texted me asking what's the newer PJ song that's out. Apparently it gets played there all the time, thought that was cool but not surprising. Last night I had switched on 'Pop Hits' on Music Choice and JB had just come on. My 2.5-yr old stopped dead in her tracks, came over and laid down with me and we listened to it. She says 'I like that song!'

I think if Pearl Jam appeared on this show, and then Ellen advertised the CD at itunes and Target we might see a sales spike.
Basically, I think housewives would swoon over this song.
