What does this particular Pearl Jam symbol mean?

I never knew what that meant..."that" is referring to on the left there is the monkey then on the right there is the person. I've always seen it, but never knew what it meant. Is it evolution?

The whole guy with the gas mask on...I've never known what that means either!
