It's getting there, but not quite there. "Adult Pop Songs" is a pretty limited panel of radio stations. Real crossover would be cracking the Pop Songs chart or, especially, the Hot 100.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -

"Just Breathe" jumps from #15 to #11 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart. It is #39 on Adult Pop Songs.
It also moves from #193 to #130 on Hot Digital Songs, and is up from #6 to #3 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. That means it could crack the Hot 100 as soon as next week. Airplay impressions were up by 1.6 million this week.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -

it continues to move up the charts... it's probably the most successful second single the band has ever released already. I'll bet by the end of this it will rival most first singles, if not top em all.Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

I totally had a hunch about this song. I'm sure there's posts of mine in the beginning of this thread that prove so.
A few more weeks and Backspacer will be on top again.

I don't think Even Flow or Daughter were ever pop hits. I'm quite positive Even Flow has NEVER been played on a pop station.. in the rock world they are on top, but the rock world is just a small percentage of the main picture of popular music.tcaporale wrote:

Last Kiss pretty much did better than any other Pearl Jam song also.0 -
Maybe, but then again, I think there has to be a balance between the pop and rock aspects of their music. No matter how played out "Just Breathe" may become, I doubt it'll ever be considered one of the band's signature songs. Maybe in terms of chart success it'll surpass them, but I think you have to look at its popularity over time as well, and a ballad from the band's ninth studio album is unlikely to have the same staying power as their earlier material.LikeAnOcean wrote:

No way will it ever be better than Even Flow.. Daughter, probably. I'm amazed that it still gets play on the rock radio station here in Oregon. I wonder if its just the PJ fandom that this particular station has or if other rock/ alternative stations are playing it too. To be honest, this song isn't that great on the radio. Its kind of a let down, because its sooo soft. I like the song, but its my least favorite on BS, usually skip it. If its for the "pop" stations, thats makes more sense, but BS has so many more songs for rock radio. Why don't they release one???Twenty-ten watch it go to fire!!!0

I'm the one who started this thread, so I guess I better step up and admit I was wrong... well kind of wrong :? I would've predicted "Just Breathe" disappearing from radio long before now... I do admit that. It hasn't become a huge hit, but it has slowly crept up the rock charts and has had pretty good staying power. Some people attribute this to the very stale programming of commercial radio. Whatever the case, I'm happy that the song has had modest success so far. Yes, I would call the success of "Just Breathe" modest at this point, not huge. We're definitely not to the territory of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (Green Day) or "Use Somebody" (Kings of Leon). It is a success as far as second singles from Pearl Jam go, which isn't saying much.
What the song hasn't done (yet) is make Backspacer sales blow up. I think Backspacer sits at #80 on the latest Billboard charts with sales still under 500,000. Maybe without "Just Breathe", Backspacer would've completely stalled and dropped out of the top 200? I don't know. If the song does continue to climb up the charts and somehow manages to get Backspacer to platinum status (1 million sold), I will definitely belly up and eat my crow. Fair enough, I don't disagree that it is not yet a "huge" hit. But, like you said, it has slowly crept up the charts. And I do think that will continue. IMHO this will end up being their top single, second only to Last Kiss.... It just makes sense, seeing in a way the two songs are somewhat similar. I think once it gathers even more cross-over success you're likely to see a more dramatic increase in sales.
Bottom line, this song brings in a whole new crowd that would otherwise not hear PJ. It brings in teeny boppers, chicks, and older folks. That's why I've believed it would be successful all along. But, you are right, can't really say whether it will yet.Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

All of these are good and fair points. And I have thought all along that Just Breathe was the best choice as a second single. I also don't believe it will do what KOL or Green Day did, but it is still possible. In fact I think Unthougth Known also has a chance to cross over if released.
Now with all that said, and on the topic of 'admitting when you are wrong', If you are going to call people out, then perhaps you should admit you were wrong about what caused the dramatic spike over the Black Friday week.
It was the sale price, not alone, but as the most significant driving factor. 0 -
As the person who made the initial comparisons to "Use Somebody" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," I would like to clarify that the jury is still out. The crossover of "Just Breathe" is just beginning. It may be strangled in its crib, or it may break out and become a pop hit. My point all along was that, of all the songs on "Backspacer," "Just Breathe" had the best chance to be a crossover hit, and crossover hits are what broaden sales. If sales are going to increase, in the vein of Kings of Leon and Green Day, it's not going to happen when the song is Bubbling Under the Hot 100, it's going to happen if the song ends up in the top 10.
