Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear

these 2 bands seem to be the cutting edge in terms of music these days, they are the "it" bands of the last few years.

Opinions of them?

I like the whole Beach Boys vocal harmony vibe of Grizzly Bear. Grizzly Bear may be breaking into the mainstream in that they are on the New Moon soundtrack. Dan Rossen has that side project in Department of Eagles, with the album In Ear Park being loved by many folks

And Animal Collective seem to be uncategorizable to make up a word. Merriweather Post Pavillion blew people away literally a year ago, it was hailed as the best album of 2009 from the minute it was leaked, and it pretty much stayed that way on all the top 10 lists of 2009. They have the added bonus of a member of the band who seems to create solo records that are as critically acclaimed as the Animal Collective albums. Young Prayer and especially Person Pitch are as fanatically drooled over as anything the whole band has done.

What do you make of these 2 beloved and critically acclaimed bands? They are the faces of indie rock, is that deserved?

    I think they are both great....the only thing that irks me about Animal Collective is they could do an album of simultaneously farting, and it would be acclaimed....from an indie standpoint I like 'The National' better than both though.

    The national are great. Boxer is like the soundtrack to my life. Very few bands of our generation have released a record like Boxer that speaks to me in the way that record does. In fact, I quit my job in large part because I felt I was becoming like those characters. "showered and blue blazered",

    Animal Collective are great, and their last album was their best yet. It's a little hard to look past the Pitchfork-led hype of them and appreciate them for what they are, but when you do their catalogue can be richly rewarding, even if their first few records are still lost on me.

    Grizzly Bear are one of my favorite rising bands. Their last two albums have been almost flawless, and the work that they put into their music, note by note, is pretty impressive. I kind of prefer Daniel Rossen's songwriting more than Ed Droste's, but they're both great talents.

    I dislike animal collective i have friends who are in love with them but i just dont see it

    theres definitely hype, and pitchfork is part of it, but if they were just another pitchfork hyped band they probably wouldnt be as big as they are right now. The whole New Moon/Twilight thing I mentioned above. And Jay-Z has come out with some of the biggest praise for GB, calling out the stagnant hip hop scene and suggesting that indie rock is where its at: with GB being the forefront. Beyonce and Solange her sister have said they love the band.
    Miley Cyrus has said she is a fan.

    So its more than P4k. P4k helped popularize the band, but when you have Jay-Z coming out and saying hip hop pales in comparion to what GB is doing, I think you are talking about another beast all together.

    I think the indie scene right now with Animal Collective, GB, Fleet Foxes and others is obsessed with the Beach Boys and vocal harmonies.

    Well, I also post on AtEase, and the hype thread for MPP went over 1000 pages!

    I agree with the vocal harmony trend in indie music. I'd add Beach House to the mix of that.

    Off topic but you should check out White Denim on iTunes. They have a free song up right now and it's pretty funky. The other songs on that album sound even better too just from judging the clips. Don't take my word completely though.

    Probably a bigger Animal Collective fan, but I think Grizzly Bear is fantastic as well!! Both groups' most recent full albums (Merriweather Post Pavillion and Veckatimest) are really awesome & worth checking out!

    I've listened to both MPP and Veckatimest a lot this year and I saw both of the bands live. I liked Grizzly Bear better in both respects. I was impressed with even something as minuscule as how Grizzly Bear set up on stage. They didn't stick the drummer in the back like every band seems to do. All four members were lined up across the front of the stage and all four sang. The songs sounded even better than they do on record. When I saw Animal Collective, I couldn't even tell what song they were playing for a good portion of the set. The mix on the songs wasn't very good and the songs just seemed to run together.

    The National does blow both of them away.

    I like both bands and listened to Veckatimest a lot last year. Like Panda Bear as well, Person Pitch is a fun album.

    But yeah, The National blows 'em all away!

    I don't understand the love for Animal Collective. They really don't do much for me.

    I thought the last Grizzly Bear album was really good. I thought Yellow House had some good songs. Those are the only two i've heard by them.

    i saw grizzly bear the other night, and am seeing them again tonight!
    really amazing live! it seemed that whe whole crowd was blown away
