What do yall think?

Put one that should never be remixed:

(in light of SG reunion :D )

1. Superunknown - Soundgarden

And one that should:

2. Badmotorfinger - Soundgarden

Give your opinions as to why these albums should/should not be remixed!

Superunknown = Great from start to finish, each song is individually mixed to suit it's needs, meaning it's not just giving a general mix that you hear on most recordings of today. Great guitar/drum tones that I've not heard to be matched in the last 16 years, vocals are superb. A remix would take away the intial vibe that was given to this album.

Badmotorfinger = Great songs, horrible mix. Drums sound like paper, and are really low in the mix. The guitars are unique but are just incredibly weak, (though I love the tones he gets, just need to be turned up a notch.) The vocals are the only thing that I really think stand out on this album in terms of mix, but the overall songwriting on this record is great! But Cameron deserves a remixing on this one, his drumming is top notch on this album (as with most records that feature Cameron! lol)

Your opinions!!!

 It's a cool topic, but it sounds like a lot of work...

For what it's worth, I grow to love my favorite albums for what they are and couldn't imagine them sounding any different. Even Badmotorfinger. There's something comforting to me about hearing a strong band that is still trying to work out the technical kinks.

Having said that, I think ...And Justice For All could use a redux. Same thing with the drums. Lars can suck it, but the fucker can pound, and they just sounded thin on that album.

About liking the albums the way they are, I contemplated that for a while, especially with Badmotorfinger. I kept thinking, "If this were remixed, would it have the same charm as it does now?" What do you think about the Ten redux? Does it lose the charm or contribute to what they were trying to do? I agree about "And Justice For All" however.

I much prefer the new remix of ten.

Yeah, most people do prefer the remix, that's what made me want to post this topic in the first place. I can see both ways, I can see how people like the cleaner version of the remix (Ten), but I can also see how some people view it as messing with what they originally were trying to do. Obviously there's no way to figure this out, but I'd be willing to bet that if the redux version of Ten was what was originally released back in 1991, I don't think it'd be as popular as it was,...just my opinion.

    I'd prefer a remaster over a remix.
  • Pretty Hate Machine could with a remastering.

I also think Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie could do with a complete overhaul! Some songs the production worked, but on some of the more rocking songs the drums sound so muffled it's shocking! Prime example:

Yeah I agree with that. But you would only be able to notice the difference on something higher than CD quality, like a DVD-audio, or something. And with the popularity of mp3's, iTunes, etc., so much is loss in the compression to a smaller file size, it almost doesn't even matter! We need a new means of audio media, something convienient like a CD (and accessibility of use, CD players are EVERYWHERE), yet a reproduction quality that exceeds 16 bit.

Yeah, I agree, but it also seems like it's more the guitars that are muffling everything else in the mix, but perhaps that contributes to the vibe that the Smash P were going for. There are some mixes out today in the mainstream Rock genre that annoy the shit out of me, like Alice in Chains - Check My Brain. It's just fake drum samples! I hate the way the drums sound on that track, hi-hats are too tinny and the drum sounds like Sean's hitting it while it's stuck in mud! Love AIC though, just the mixing on most tracks out there today in Rock SUUUUUCCCCKKKKK

  • Yeah modern rock mixes do largely suck.

Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
  • I agree remaster is the way to go, rather than remix. Metallica's "Death Magnetic" is one album that needs SERIOUSLY remastering.
It's gonna be a glorious day...

Completely agree...maybe some rewriting as well lol.

Touche! I do think the Ten revision sounds better, but I wouldn't say that it NEEDED it.. And frankly, I find myself listening to the other non-remixed disc more, for the extra tracks. PJ isn't a band that uses the "grit" as part of their sound, so I can understand their rationale. It certainly didn't lose anything (charm or otherwise), but I'm not sure it actually contributed anything for me. It'd be like my already-hot wife, who I love as-is, getting a boob job: sure, it'd be fun, but it wouldn't make me love her more. ;)

Binaural - obviously. You get used to it, but the first few times anyone hears it they're checking their system.
Twenty-ten watch it go to fire!!!
