"Just Breathe" holds at #15 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart for the week ending January 16, 2010, but continues to gain airplay.
The Rock Songs chart demonstrates just how pathetically calcified and sclerotic rock radio is. "Just Breathe" and Slipknot's "Snuff" are the "newest" songs in the top 15, and both have already been on the chart for 12 weeks. The songs above those two have been on the chart for 18, 21, 20, 22, 17, 15, 13, 21, 29, 26, 28, 31 and 24 weeks (the last one is "The Fixer"). There are two other songs in the top 20 that have been on the chart for 31 weeks!
Some of this is attributable to the holidays, when stations generally freeze their playlists, but that doesn't account for all of it. In the top 25, there are only two songs that have been on the chart less than 11 weeks, and none has been on for less than 5 weeks (the "newbie" is "Your Decision" by Alice In Chains).
The bottom line is that your local commercial rock radio station, as it tells you how cool and cutting-edge it is, is deathly afraid of playing anything new. They give their listeners no credit, assuming that they will reach for the tuner as soon as something unfamiliar is played. It's a sad state of affairs.
It really is a sad state of affairs. Many of the songs on that chart are total garbage. How many times can you play Shinedown and Linkin Park? It makes me want to swerve my car off the side of the road.
I am glad, however, that PJ continues to get airplay with both the Fixer and Just Breathe. I think they're both great songs. And satellite radio is a good alternative to all the garbage out there, though I'm kind of tired of paying for it. I don't listen to it often enough to make it worth the money.

I was in a friends car 3 days ago and we were going to have dinner and before i enter teh store i heard just breathe and when i left the store 3 hours later i hear it again on the same radio station. they play the song a lot in Toronto.
By the way, I should note that the songs that have been on Rock Songs for 31 weeks are even older than they appear. The Rock Songs chart was only started 31 weeks ago. Before that, Billboard had separate Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. So "Use Somebody," for example is actually much older than 31 weeks.
Just Breathe is doing well at radio. It is #4 on Triple A stations (Adult Alternative Albums), #12 on Alternative, #44 Active Rock, #24 Mainstream Rock. It continues to gain spins on most of these formats as of Jan 7th. It should at least encourage them to put out a 3rd single.

I'm amazed that it still gets play on the rock radio station here in Oregon. I wonder if its just the PJ fandom that this particular station has or if other rock/ alternative stations are playing it too. To be honest, this song isn't that great on the radio. Its kind of a let down, because its sooo soft. I like the song, but its my least favorite on BS, usually skip it. If its for the "pop" stations, thats makes more sense, but BS has so many more songs for rock radio. Why don't they release one???

I do admit that. It hasn't become a huge hit, but it has slowly crept up the rock charts and has had pretty good staying power. Some people attribute this to the very stale programming of commercial radio. Whatever the case, I'm happy that the song has had modest success so far. Yes, I would call the success of "Just Breathe" modest at this point, not huge. We're definitely not to the territory of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (Green Day) or "Use Somebody" (Kings of Leon). It is a success as far as second singles from Pearl Jam go, which isn't saying much.
What the song hasn't done (yet) is make Backspacer sales blow up. I think Backspacer sits at #80 on the latest Billboard charts with sales still under 500,000. Maybe without "Just Breathe", Backspacer would've completely stalled and dropped out of the top 200? I don't know. If the song does continue to climb up the charts and somehow manages to get Backspacer to platinum status (1 million sold), I will definitely belly up and eat my crow. Still don't see this happening.

I think once it gathers even more cross-over success you're likely to see a more dramatic increase in sales.

Now with all that said, and on the topic of 'admitting when you are wrong', If you are going to call people out, then perhaps you should admit you were wrong about what caused the dramatic spike over the Black Friday week.
It was the sale price, not alone, but as the most significant driving factor.
As the person who made the initial comparisons to "Use Somebody" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," I would like to clarify that the jury is still out. The crossover of "Just Breathe" is just beginning. It may be strangled in its crib, or it may break out and become a pop hit. My point all along was that, of all the songs on "Backspacer," "Just Breathe" had the best chance to be a crossover hit, and crossover hits are what broaden sales. If sales are going to increase, in the vein of Kings of Leon and Green Day, it's not going to happen when the song is Bubbling Under the Hot 100, it's going to happen if the song ends up in the top 10. Time will tell.
