Yeah, it's amazing that the Fixer is still going. I also cannot recall the last time one of their singles stuck around so long. It's been like 20 weeks now! And I'm not even tired of it. Usually I'm sick of the first single once the album comes out, as it usually is released 2 months before the album.
I don't know if Just Breathe is going to be a smash, but it's probably already done enough to warrant a 3rd single. And charting where it is now while the Fixer is still strong is really impressive. They have 2 songs getting signficant play at the same time. This definitely didn't happen with WWS / Life Wasted, I am Mine / Save You, or NAIS / Light Years. You'd probably have to go back to Given to Fly / Wishlist, and I don't even know if it happened then.
Given to Fly was #1 which The Fixer wasn't.
True, but did it hang around this long? I can't remember. I know it was a big hit but we're working on like 5 months of the fixer being in the top 20 rock / alt rock songs.[/quote]
Yeah Imagine how much bigger those songs would've been had they not shunned the media. I think that's why they released NAIS instead of Insignificance as the first single off of Binaural. To not ride off the success of Last Kiss. Or maybe why they didn't include Sad in Binaural.
I really don't think anything on Binaural is very mainstream friendly. If anything, Thin Air was, but that only got a few plays before it dropped from our local radio station.

Thanks for the numbers, mr. igby. Yeah, many proclaimed that "Just Breathe" was spurring the big sales spike last week, but it's clear the Target 2-day sale was responsible. Hey, at least it looks like Backspacer may hit 400,000 next week!
Something I just thought of. I believe it was established that Target paid up front $5 million for the 1 million copies of Backspacer.
As of right now, Target has lost money on this deal. Unless something strange happens and bucks the trend of album sales, who in their right mind is going to pay Pearl Jam to distribute their next album? Be it a record label or retailer?

If Target did that they're fucking stupid. 1 million record sales in 2009 is like 7 million record sales in 1999. You have to be Lady Gaga or some super popular pop music artist to sell a million copies nowadays. When was the last time a PJ cd went legitimately platinum, anyway?
dream the dreams of other men...you will be no one's rival

They did it with full knowledge that they would take a loss. It is done to drive sales to other items.
By the way, something to bear in mind here, as "Just Breathe" moves up from #21 to #18 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart and regains its bullet: December is a very stagnant time for radio station playlists. Last week, only three of the top 20 on the Rock Songs chart had significant airplay gains (and one of the three was "The Fixer," which held steady at #12).
Speaking of "The Fixer," it moves back into the top ten on Rock Songs this week. It is now at #10 in its 20th week on the chart. This is a nice thing for Pearl Jam, but also part of a sad commentary on commercial radio and how sclerotic their playlists are. "Use Somebody" is still in the top 15, for Pete's sake. Would it kill these people to play something new? They are completely paranoid that people will change the station if they hear something unfamiliar for more than five seconds.

Box stores do this all the time. A loss leader to bring people in and sell them other higher margin items. Go to a home depot any day you want and you can see this everywhere, particularly in the power tools section.

where do you get your numbers? I would like to know. I like that sort of stuff. The only place I know of is hitsdailydouble. but they only do it for the top 50.
I also think Backspacer is going to be up next week.
Just Breathe needs to cross over to pop stations already. I can't see it being a top 10 rock song because its not a rock song. It will propably hold in their a while. Its getting heavy play on alternative stations here in Chicago.

as long as it's by a rock band it will be played on rock stations. it's been added to some Hot AC stations. But it might take awhile for it to take off if ever. The Fixer should've been played on more Hot Ac stations by now. But it's the CHR stations that have the most audiences.

Yeah, I understand how the retail world works, but what I'm saying is if they are struggling to sell half of what they have, clearly Pearl Jam is losing its drawing power.
Who is going to take on Pearl Jam as a loss leader if it isn't going to bring anyone into the store?

Haven't they sold like 400,000 copies?.. Even if it brought 100,000 into the store, I'm sure it made them money elsewhere.
Given the sales of their last 5 albums, I'm sure Target knew what they were doing.

I went to Target twice this year. And both times were for Pearl Jam. And the second time. I bought the cd and some Campbell's chilli.
I barely at all listen to radio or watch the video channels, but in the last day I tuned into 'Just Breathe' on a local alternative station and saw the video on VH1. It could be a fluke, but I was still surprised. The song is amazing, although I felt it might be too delicate for radio. But man, it sure sounded good to hear. It seems to be slowly crawling up the billboard radio charts, too.
However, the real secret weapon in the Backspacer arsenal and one of my top PJ songs is undeniably 'Got Some'. I understand we all have our individual favorites when it comes to the songs that move us. Yet there are a few that imbue greatness in an almost objective sense. For example, there isn't much argument concerning the excellence of ‘RVM' or ‘Nothingman’. Even those who have a complete ignorant bias against pearl jam (and I'm sure we all know people like that) make exceptions for songs like these. As if some unknowable quality within the combination of rhythm, melody, and lyrics, insists you can't “not” like it. It's almost like alchemy. I tend to believe ‘Got Some’ is one of those objectively awesome tunes. Given that 'Got Some' is, in fact, scientifically proven to trigger a significant production of endorphins, it can be used as a sort of gateway drug to lead the listener into the ultimate "high" that is Backspacer. So if this doesn't end up as some breakthrough song, if it doesn't find itself exposed to a high volume of radio airplay for a long period of time; then I fear there is little hope in pearl jam gaining widespread appeal again. By that, I mean accomplish one of the goals they set out with Backspacer, which is to win over some new (younger) fans. Lets say this strategy works and their popularity does gain momentum; then ‘Amongst the Waves’ will be waiting in the wings to launch them into orbit.
I just think it would be a shame if Backspacer doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. As much as I love more offbeat bands, pearl jam is more than that. In a few years they will probably be writing more esoteric music and it sure would be neat if some extra people came along for the ride.

I know. But it's not stopping them from adding that new creed song.
streetpulse has backspacer's unit change up 117% from last week. I know last time i saw them up in percentage from the week before. they ended up with negative sales. But the last time it started at -36% and ended up at +64%. This time it started in the positive on Tuesday. And has gone up since.
