On the local alternative/indie station in philly (yrockonxpn)

Just Breathe came in #2 on their weekly 11 behind Brandon Benson (probably cuz they were giving away tix for his show)

  • I think trying to make a hit in todays music world is tough unless you are radiohead or trent reznor who seem to have access to some divine plan for how to proceed in a post napster world that no band and no record label has access to.

That said, putting a song on one tv show, is a step in the right direction, because unless you are a dolt, you realize thats how bands become big now. Putting one song on one tv show for this album aint gonna cut it, so, I really dont understand the OP.

The bands that have gotten big via tv in the last 7 years or so, like Death cab, modest mouse, the shins, josh radin, didnt get big by pushing one song on tv. They created an elaborate marketing plan that included everything from liscencing songs for tv commercials, to actually appearing on these shows, to having their songs be played in some of the most emotionally intense parts of these shows.

So, you gotta do more than liscence a song on Flash Forward to have it be a hit. More sense (and cents) would have been accrued if the band had liscened the song on multiple shows, had gone to KEXP and KCRW two of the most important radio stations in the world, and had done press with any indie outlet.

Again, ed and mike admitted they wanted this album to be a success, to be a hit. And thats fine. But if you want that, if you want your album to be a hit in 21st century world, post napster, you gotta do more than what PJ has done.

whats been done so far, aint gonna cut it, if you want a hit record, and the band does.

Just Breathe is a a beautiful song. Not boring at all, imo. I really enjoyed hearing it live the 4 times I did over the past week. To cap it off, I heard The End in Brisbane, another gem. Dont expect everyone to like these songs, but PJ do their slow stuff as well as their rockers, it's just a matter of personal taste as to whether one like them or not. I dont think it should have been released as a single however, Got Some would have been better. A more radio friendly song.

I agree. The clips were a downer for me, but when I heard the song as a whole I was really taken away.. Song is just starting to get rotation here in Chicago. People have to stop jumping to conclusions. Hits don't just happen right away. They take months, sometimes years.

EDIT: Got Some was released as the single. It was a double single with Just Breathe.. radio stations are picking Just Breathe.

Got Some will not see success. Reason being, it took me a while to "get it" after the O'Brien performance. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome song.. if the audience doesn't get something out of it after a listen or two, songs are doomed to fail. Just Breathe was able to grab me on first listen, and will have better success with others. Proof and point, radio stations chose it over Got Some.

well see what it does in europe....
  • A couple points. With the record itself so short I was kind of expecting separate B-sides, but none so far. Why wouldn't Johnny Guitar do well as a single" its fast and rockin and appears to be kind of universal like Last Kiss. To hard to pick out the lyrics?

As for ed's voice, any of us would recognize a whisper of it in a crowded subway, but the smoking has got to be catching up with it. Being short and using every square cm of lung space to sing, the damage will be much worse than a normal persom, I believe he wants to quit, but it's nasty mean and just hates to let one go. Let's all pull for him to win this one. Sandy

As I predicted, prominent placement on a primetime TV show apparently had zero impact on sales. The "Flash Forward" week's sales were reflected in The Billboard 200 chart where the record plunged from #69 to #91.

The music industry has undergone radical change in the last fifteen years, but one thing remains true: if you want to sell a lot of records, get your songs played on good old-fashioned radio.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.
  • I personally don't like it when PJ get notoriety from their slow songs. Betterman killed PJ for me for a while. Hearing it on the radio every 10 minutes (back when I still listened to radio) made me sick of that song and the band for a while. I was glad when it disappeared. I would skip it every time I put on Vitalogy.

I still can't really stomach that song.

From Ed's mouth after Backspacer was released - "We just found out today that our album debuted at number 1. It's our first number 1 album since 1996. Back then we didn't give a shit and WE STILL DON'T!

They don't really give a shit dude or they WOULD do more thats the point, they don't really care that much.

You're referring to Backspacer's jump on the Billboard charts. I think it's pretty obvious that the jump up the charts this week is due to Target putting the price at $6.50 on two huge shopping days, Black Friday and Saturday.

When I made the original post that "Just Breathe" didn't do it, my thoughts were that the song had seemed to peak on the charts. It's been #22, #23 & #22 the last three weeks on the Billboard Rock charts. Many people thought "Just Breathe" would be the equivalent of "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon or Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - a song that blew up on multiple radio formats and pushed Backspacer toward platinum status. People have argued that this process could take a while. I just don't see it happening.

I think "Just Breathe" has pretty much peaked. And Backspacer, still sitting at less than 400,000 copies sold, crawled back to #43 with it priced at $6.50 for a couple days after Thanksgiving... it's not like it reappeared in the Top 20. What will it slip down to next week when the price is back to normal for the full week?

Just Breathe is alright, but the chorus is kinda lame and I don't think flows well with the rest of the song. I think it is too soft and the lyrics too girly to be a big hit.
  • I heard it over the speakers while eating a 12" BMT at Subway yesterday...it made my sandwich a little bit more delicious.

The only time I've heard it ouside my own ipod is at my little community college in Chattanooga, TN. They were blaring it on the loudspeaker during lunch. Gotta say that was weird....

I don't think you can pinpoint it on the price change. Holiday shopping yes. Let' see where JB is on the charts this week. I'm hearing it more and the video (Austin City Limits) is getting airplay. JB could be a slow burning single that has staying power. Don't write it off just yet...

Just Breathe is actually doing quite well. If you took the time to look at all the updated charts, you'd see that airplay has increased on multiple formats. It is currently #19 on Alternative Radio and #8 on Triple A radio.

Let's get our facts straight before you come up with some half-baked assumptions. Go back to your day job, this one isn't working for you.

Just Breathe will be much bigger, you'll see.

i have to admit just from personal experiences from friends of mine who arent into pearl jam, they are really into just breathe so i do think this song has some cross over affect...these friends of mine are more into rap and mainstream rock so it was nice to get their feedback on this song

time will tell tho with JB and if it doesnt catch on so what this album is a big time sleeper and a great listen

yeah its doing quite well. better than i expected.

i thought they should have made this the 3rd single behind amongst the waves. but it seems to be getting more airplay around these parts lately.

and there's no way it could have done as well as use somebody since the kol did about 40 times as much press for it as pj did.

so all in all, not bad. i think it will catch on more and more too.

You have basically summarized the argument correctly, although it's not just that the process of crossing over could take a while. It does take a while. The way things work, rock radio will already be playing whatever the next single turns out to be when Top 40 radio starts to catch on to "Just Breathe."

As far as the chart performance is concerned, although the song has gone 22-23-22, it is important to note that it has gained airplay each week, regardless of its chart position. In other words, its airplay has continued to grow.

It is absolutely attributable to the price drop. You're right that holiday shopping tends to boost sales, but those boosts occur across the board for every album in the market (and they tend to spike in the two weeks before Christmas, not at Thanksgiving). There is no other explanation for a 50-notch rise on the chart this week.

Sales will increase as Christmas approaches for the reasons you describe. 24,000 in sales was good enough for #43 this week, but it might take 60,000 in sales to be #43 in two or three weeks.
