I think trying to make a hit in todays music world is tough unless you are radiohead or trent reznor who seem to have access to some divine plan for how to proceed in a post napster world that no band and no record label has access to.
That said, putting a song on one tv show, is a step in the right direction, because unless you are a dolt, you realize thats how bands become big now. Putting one song on one tv show for this album aint gonna cut it, so, I really dont understand the OP.
The bands that have gotten big via tv in the last 7 years or so, like Death cab, modest mouse, the shins, josh radin, didnt get big by pushing one song on tv. They created an elaborate marketing plan that included everything from liscencing songs for tv commercials, to actually appearing on these shows, to having their songs be played in some of the most emotionally intense parts of these shows.
So, you gotta do more than liscence a song on Flash Forward to have it be a hit. More sense (and cents) would have been accrued if the band had liscened the song on multiple shows, had gone to KEXP and KCRW two of the most important radio stations in the world, and had done press with any indie outlet.
Again, ed and mike admitted they wanted this album to be a success, to be a hit. And thats fine. But if you want that, if you want your album to be a hit in 21st century world, post napster, you gotta do more than what PJ has done.
whats been done so far, aint gonna cut it, if you want a hit record, and the band does.0 -
will Vh1 play the Just Breathe performance?I miss igotid880

Just Breathe is a a beautiful song. Not boring at all, imo. I really enjoyed hearing it live the 4 times I did over the past week. To cap it off, I heard The End in Brisbane, another gem. Dont expect everyone to like these songs, but PJ do their slow stuff as well as their rockers, it's just a matter of personal taste as to whether one like them or not. I dont think it should have been released as a single however, Got Some would have been better. A more radio friendly song.0

EDIT: Got Some was released as the single. It was a double single with Just Breathe.. radio stations are picking Just Breathe.
Got Some will not see success. Reason being, it took me a while to "get it" after the O'Brien performance. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome song.. if the audience doesn't get something out of it after a listen or two, songs are doomed to fail. Just Breathe was able to grab me on first listen, and will have better success with others. Proof and point, radio stations chose it over Got Some.0 -
well see what it does in europe....0

A couple points. With the record itself so short I was kind of expecting separate B-sides, but none so far. Why wouldn't Johnny Guitar do well as a single" its fast and rockin and appears to be kind of universal like Last Kiss. To hard to pick out the lyrics?
As for ed's voice, any of us would recognize a whisper of it in a crowded subway, but the smoking has got to be catching up with it. Being short and using every square cm of lung space to sing, the damage will be much worse than a normal persom, I believe he wants to quit, but it's nasty mean and just hates to let one go. Let's all pull for him to win this one. Sandy0 -
As I predicted, prominent placement on a primetime TV show apparently had zero impact on sales. The "Flash Forward" week's sales were reflected in The Billboard 200 chart where the record plunged from #69 to #91.
The music industry has undergone radical change in the last fifteen years, but one thing remains true: if you want to sell a lot of records, get your songs played on good old-fashioned radio.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -
I personally don't like it when PJ get notoriety from their slow songs. Betterman killed PJ for me for a while. Hearing it on the radio every 10 minutes (back when I still listened to radio) made me sick of that song and the band for a while. I was glad when it disappeared. I would skip it every time I put on Vitalogy.
I still can't really stomach that song.Gimli 1993

From Ed's mouth after Backspacer was released - "We just found out today that our album debuted at number 1. It's our first number 1 album since 1996. Back then we didn't give a shit and WE STILL DON'T!
They don't really give a shit dude or they WOULD do more thats the point, they don't really care that much.0 -

You're referring to Backspacer's jump on the Billboard charts. I think it's pretty obvious that the jump up the charts this week is due to Target putting the price at $6.50 on two huge shopping days, Black Friday and Saturday.
When I made the original post that "Just Breathe" didn't do it, my thoughts were that the song had seemed to peak on the charts. It's been #22, #23 & #22 the last three weeks on the Billboard Rock charts. Many people thought "Just Breathe" would be the equivalent of "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon or Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - a song that blew up on multiple radio formats and pushed Backspacer toward platinum status. People have argued that this process could take a while. I just don't see it happening.
I think "Just Breathe" has pretty much peaked. And Backspacer, still sitting at less than 400,000 copies sold, crawled back to #43 with it priced at $6.50 for a couple days after Thanksgiving... it's not like it reappeared in the Top 20. What will it slip down to next week when the price is back to normal for the full week?1998: 6/26, 6/27, 6/29

Just Breathe is alright, but the chorus is kinda lame and I don't think flows well with the rest of the song. I think it is too soft and the lyrics too girly to be a big hit.0
