Remembering Ed at Carnegie Hall
Corduroy Footsteps

I have been a PJ fan ever since first seeing the Jeremy video in August '92 and shortly before moving out to Seattle for a year. However, the first time I saw any of the band live was for a 50th Birthday concert for Pete Townshend that Roger Daltrey put together in later February '94 at Carnegie Hall. I got about the highest up, most remote seat in the house, but at least I was in the room, in no small part because Ed was on the bill. I like to think of this period as the peak of Ed's pissed-off phase. There was a revolving door of special guests, hecklers all night yelling "Where the fuck's Pete!" At one point, an exasperated Roger yelled back for them to shut up. The night felt overall very haphazardly organized.
After a sort of intermission, enter one singular Ed Vedder quietly ambling on to the stage without as much as an introduction. I recall that he got a moderately reasonable crowd reaction, some howls of approval upon his presence. He proceeded to buzz through 3 or 4 Who songs (I think, Squeeze Box, Naked Eye, definitely My Generation) with just him on electric guitar. I remember loving the voice, but feeling like the performance was too much like a teenage kid in his bedroom noodling around. Then that was it, he swiftly left the stage and did not return, even for the obligatory sing-along finale. There was one other night of these shows and I think Ed played different Who tunes that other night. These shows were also infamous for the report that Ed trashed his dressing room in true rock n' roll fashion. By the way, Pete did come out for like two songs at the end, but I think crowd would have wanted him out there a bit more than that.
In recent times, I've been thinking about that performance of Ed's a lot. Perhaps, I would have a different view of it now, having followed the band for all these years since. And, how wild it is to think now that I actually saw Ed perform at Carnegie Hall. Just curious if anyone else out there went to either of these two shows?
Thank you for listening...

Great Thread!!
I've always wanted to see footage from this show, Unfortunately I've never seen any surface. Apparently Eddie was the only performer not filmed that night -probably by his own request-
I've heard that the hecklers were pretty nasty during those 2 nights at Carnegie, but apparently Eddie's version of Naked Eye was so spot on and passionate that it completely stole the show and won the crowd over.
You were definately lucky to have been there that night.
Hope someday footage of this event surfaces.0 -
ed was originally booed at first and than won the crowd over. crowd didn't even know it was ed at first cause ed came out to dark stage lights and continued to play with the dark stage lights. also ed and pete trashed a dressing room and the bill was 20 grand and they were both banned forever from carnegie hall. that ban was later rescinded. pete picked up the dressing room bill.Gonzo1977 wrote:Apparently Eddie was the only performer not filmed that night -probably by his own request-Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight

There's a soundboard quality version of 'Let My Love Open The Door' from the 2nd night, it's as beautiful as anything you might ever hear.
According to Five Horizons, Ed was greeted with boos on the first night but was so impressive that the crowd were very much behind him the next night.2006: London Astoria, Lisbon I & II, Paris, Verona, Milano2007: Wembley, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Nijmegen2009: Manchester2010: Belfast, Berlin2012: Manchester I & II2014: Leeds, Milton Keynes2018: Amsterdam I, Prague, Krakow, Berlin, Barcelona, London
2022: Berlin, Budapest, Krakow, Amsterdam II0 -

As far as I know, you can't get the entire performance, just this one song. I'm having trouble locating the website where I got it from but I'll post a link when I do find it.2006: London Astoria, Lisbon I & II, Paris, Verona, Milano2007: Wembley, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Nijmegen2009: Manchester2010: Belfast, Berlin2012: Manchester I & II2014: Leeds, Milton Keynes2018: Amsterdam I, Prague, Krakow, Berlin, Barcelona, London

my father who is a big Who fan (also Pearl Jam) was asked by his friend to go. he always tells me how Ed was crazed but still performed the best songs of the night. he said he has so much energy and got the crowd on his side. he remembers hearing the buzz around the place that he did destroy the dressing rooms and the people at Carnegie were furious, obviously since he was banned.
i wish i could see this show since i heard so much about it and it still one of a few PJ/Ed shows that still isnt fully understood or known about.Beacon '08
